It is a really vague questions. You need drive the car and see how it runs before making those decisions. Mileage does not mean shit however 147K is not bad. 1 owner is good sign that it is a family owned car and used by 1 person, which mean good chance they took care of the car. Back in the college days I had a 97 honda with 200k on it and I did not even changed the oil for the 1 year I had but that sucker would still run like a beast.

Answer us this - 1) Are you working full time or a student? 2) What's the cost this mentioned car? 3) which part of the US (I assume) are you in? I have been driving a 15 year old Corolla since my college days (I have been working full time for 3 years) which has been fine, which I bought for $2500. However, the used car landscape has changed recently so answer us those questions and I can give my input.

ujl - If you are earning a decent salary (which I assume you are >$50K or thereabouts), I would spend a few more thousands and just get a newer car (mainly for safety purposes but also for "keeping up with the Jones"). What year is this car? The newer cars have pretty good features with lane assists and blind spot warnings (plus a lot more). I am planning on an Infiniti Q50 '15 - '17 myself soon (a used one).

Also, when I bought my Corolla, it was in the 65000 miles which was really low and now it is around 130K. Reliable but safety wise on the highways, I feel concerned at times :).

My suggestion : DO NOT buy a new car. buying a new car is a scam , you lose your money right away when you buy from the dealer. $4995 sounds little pricey for that mileage tbh. But then you buying from a dealer. They charge you a lot. If you spend 5k in Craiglist you will get a steal ...you just have to look and find the right one. Lot of scammers in the CG so do your research correct. Always check if the seller in CG is a dealer avoid those. A lot of times people with dealer license buy cars from auctions and sell it in CG. You want a car that is family owned.

Depend on which year of honda/acura your talking about. while the engines are super duper reliable....they have a very bad tranny. especially 98 - 2010. honda community know of this. V6 were hit harder than the 4 cyc. to be honest...just go to the honda forums. you'll learn more there than here.

@ passinthru......not sure if you want to spend $$$$$ in Q50. They have direct injection. although DI are very good at efficiency/torque/power they are bad design from the start. You WILL get suffer from clogged intake manifold due to carbon build before you hit 70k miles for sure. Direct injection engine are the worse design ever......PERIOD.

2004 Honda Accord for $4995 and 147 K miles is little expensive I think . Try to look for some other options like different dealers and do compare and contrast. You might be able to get Toyota and Nissan altima too for a good price. Nissan altima is good option too but Honda's are generally sold at higher price by dealer and in-person. If I were you, I would look available options by dealers within 20-30 miles radius(out of city dealer could be little cheaper) and compare and contrast the available price. You can also use websites like cargurus.com (Which I mostly use to buy car for me and my friends) and be careful some of the listings on cargurus are salvage title too.
