(Source: thinkingnepal.com) Who will Save us from Trouble? When Gotham City was on fire, Batman was there to save it. Who will come when Kathmandu is on fire? I don’t see anyone coming. We have no Nepali superhero to save us from trouble, no Nepali version of the G.I. Joe, no Nepali version of Batman, and not even Shaktiman. I, like many other Nepalis, grew up relating to and relying on Spiderman, Superman, Batman and Ironman. Once when I was in my Academic & Professional writing class, I had an insight that I will never forget. We were going over some grammar and style issues that we as young writers often faced, and in the midst of all this I looked across to one of my classmates who had worn a G.I. Joe shirt to class. I looked at it for at least five minutes and I felt like crying out loud. I looked at the words G. I. Joe and I finally realized that I had never known what it actually meant when I was a kid, and I remember it being one of my favorites. I often ran around with my “G-I-Jo”, not ever suspecting that G.I. Joe was not Nepali. Why was I counting on a foreign superhero? Where was my Nepali superhero? This is an issue beyond which country the superhero is from; it is about the much larger issue of Nepali identity. Hope, some day we have our very own Nepali superhero. Similarly, we also seem to have no real hero, at least in politics, in our society. The same old power-struggles, same old mentality, and the same old outcomes. When will it stop? Where is the real hero that will take our country forward? When will s/he come, if ever? Can one person save us from our social, political, and economic failures? What are we as common citizens  to do? Do we just wait for a “real-hero” or a superhero to rescue us, or do we do the best we can and all play our small part?
