I learnt of three exciting projects led by Nepali students studying in the US to be conducted in Nepal this summer with prospect for continuity and scaling up. Hope to see more student-led initiatives.  1). Change to Change Mugu  Change to Change is a month long educational program for youth from diverse backgrounds. Youth go on trips for social change and as messengers of peace, sustainability and development. Traveling extensively in remote places, meeting communities, working with social ventures, learning developmental issues and most importantly spreading the message of peace, sustainability and development; these youth return with stories of social change, and the program enables them to use these stories to inspire a larger community.  The program revolves around a month long trip, which is designed to make the participants (Change Fellows) question themselves and their existing beliefs. It is an opportunity to see, feel and know Nepal. With the number of young people leaving Nepal in apprehension, frustration, lack of social freedom and an assumption that there is a better world outside. Change to Change gives youth an opportunity to experience what they have got and to realize what they can do. It is an opportunity to redefine goals, precipitations and attitude.  Change to Change aspires to inspire the youth to experience Nepal and ultimately realize that there’s a “better world inside”.   2). Founding Peace a) short-term: i) renovation of the room and establishment of a community center by the participation of all the people available in the community in order to bring the community together and show what they can do with a common purpose ii) make the community center a place for supplementary resource to the school and the community;iii) carry out different activities in the community center, while we are there, as a means of bringing together people of different castes and gender iv) make the community center a common place to have discussions, share ideas, and resolve issues of the community; v)foster relationships between the members of the community in order to create and maintain peace within the community. b) long-term: Our emphasis on the school as our venue for the center is not only because it is a place where laws prohibit discrimination, but more importantly, because children are our targeted group. While our short-term goal is as simple as to provide a much-needed physical infrastructure to run village councils and meetings, we aim towards a much larger goal of a communal harmony. The children, with very little understanding of castes or gender biases, and whose counterparts of different backgrounds happen to feel, think and act the same way that they do, if properly shown, will be open to questioning the validity of such stratifications. One may ask, what kind of peace is envisioned by such subtle revolution against the pre-existing “harmony” of castes, but, a peace that comes at the expense of someone’s basic right to even drink water from the same tap as others, to be recognized as the same kind of human as others, to even have a say — let alone equal say — in matters concerning their basic sustenance, is a peace that needs to be differentiated from silence. Our community center is a big solution by itself, but it has the potential to be a momentous thing and, in our brief stay, we plan to increase its thrust by embodying the change that we want to see in the foreseeable future. 3). Connect Hungi -  The project aims to establish an internet-equipped computer lab in Janakalyan Madhyamik Vidyalaya of Hungi VDC in Palpa district. To make the lab sustainable in the long run, the project aims to take a more entrepreneurial focus on improving the economic condition of the community that we are working for.
