I have seen lots of my Nepalese friends who joined US army and serving for this country.Im also in mid process , and if everything goes well I will also be US army  soon, and yeh I already graduated from college. Is it worth to join the military or spend rest of your life maintaining visa status? Please I wanna hear your opinions.

How you going to live as first class citizen in a third world country? Don't make sense at all. If the country itself is a third world country, how could you brag abt being first class citizen when the water you drank is immpure, not even sufficient water, loadshedding all the time, no big higways to drive your BMW if you can afford also, no standard restaurants, malls etc so what do you guys mean to say. Even the low class family here in USA is considered first class citizen in Nepal. Ya most of the people go to army coz they don't have no choice, can't finish school nor wana work in walmarts and get frustrated. Most of the guys outside Kathmandu valley are the ones who join US army because they don't have properties in Kathmandu and can't go back in live in misery which is village. Further US army doesn't have quality. Even 5 ft guys are in the army, not to mention skinny ones and fat ones too. Seems like US want to increase their foot soldiers and want to exceed China's number. Do you know how hard it is to get into British army? A way tougher.

I think you should not join US army just for the sake of maintaining your immigration status. Serving in one's national army is a patriotic act by the highest standard. So, join the army if you will really feel proud of serving your country (i.e. US). And it is truth that, in modern and civilized nations, the national army is generally used to protect and promote national interest. If it were to promote an interest of a person/party/group, then you may not be able to say it is a real service to the nation, but generally it is no so.I think joining US army and subsequently becoming US citizen and feeling pride and proud of your country is differnt from 'Gurkhas' serving in British and Indian army.

Joining US army for papers is no different and should not be any different than Joining Microsoft for papers. You do not join micro soft for the love and loyalty for that corporation. Microsoft is willing to sponsor you for the labor you are willing to give them and US Army is also willing to sponsor your papers if you are willing to give them your labor for the way they want it.

I hear too much crap about love, patriotism, emotions, and pride. Its a business and should be treated as a business transaction. Weigh out your risk/reward and make a decision.

I think not all the people can fully grasp the idea of sources of personal happiness and satisfaction. I have met many people who are serving in their national army in Nepal and in the US, and also other people who have formed some perceptions about jobs in army. People get a higher satisfaction and happiness in the job of their choice even if the salary and other perks may be little higher in another job. Pride and satisfaction that i can get serving my country's arm force outweighs a little higher salary in another job, at least for me. People get satisfaction/pleasure by making donation, some are even anonymous. Normal people donate for two reasons: gives them satisfaction that they could help someone in need; they get some recognition from others. Likewise, people who are considering serving in army need to factor the 'recognition from others' as an added source of personal happiness.

So if you say "In the modern world "bir gurkha" are called merceneries. Merceneries who fight for money or papers.", there should be a difference between fighting as a 'job' and serving your country, be it Nepal or US.

 password bro

stop asking people to join the airforce or the navy as an OFFICER becasue in order to join in as an officer one has to have US citizenship already before joining!

LATO LE BAU BHANNA NAPAKO JASTO ...."be an officer...be an officer...."

officer huna pako bhaye ta sabai officer hunthiye....officer huna lai bachelors degree pani ta huna paryo ni with US citizenship. MOST of the nepali who have joined the army do not have a bachelors degree

many people start as E1 (enlisted 1) which is the bottom of the bottom. nepali guys with bachelors degree can join in as E4.

Sap dude,
The arguments which you are putting is not true for all the cases. You can't generalize every profession like that. Yes people join corporations because of better pay and perks but I have seen so many people who choose their profession because they really love it and really passionate for it. Without passion & love, you can't succeed and that is the ultimate truth. If you don't love your job then how can you enjoy your life and if you don't enjoy your life then what is the point of living life.

There are so many people in Nepal who are sacrificing glorious corporate career and pursuing their dream which they love it. Personal satisfaction is beyond money.

Well it depends on each individual. I was young when I joined the navy and had fun for 5 years traveling around the world. Job was not easy though. It was locked job; could not quit even if I wanted to in the middle. Got out of the military with honorable discharge, went to school on GI Bill, and got my bachelor’s degree without any student loans.

I have seen some families torn apart from military jobs (Yes! even Nepalese). People make stupid simple mistakes and the consequence from military discharge other than honorable is unimaginable in the job market.

As per you, you can enlist, go to the boot camp, finish school according to your rate, get citizenship, put in package for officer (if you wanna become one), or do your time as enlisted and get out.

Talk to the Nepalese folks who are already in the Army. They would be the best people to get advice from. Weigh the pros and cons, and then decide.

If you got passion to become  an army and a fighter..you should by all means follow your dreams...one Nepali dude became the best soldier among  the whole list of warriors last year..that was quite inspiring..all the best.

If you could write about your experience being there for a year, training, process to enlistment and other pros and cons; it will help out fellow countrymen who might be following your path to the army.

you took some from this forum, now would be great to give something back and share. we all succeed when we help each other out. i am sure you havent forgotten as they say in training "co-operate and graduate".

@Kaji sahab
Training was little bit hard not as hard as I had thought. Mentally challenging physically less challenging. If anyone wanna join the army I would say go for it. There are lots of Nepalese in the US army now .Single people don't make good money but if your married you make good money (around 3-5k)monthly depends on which state u stationed. Medical free for u and your spouse. Get around $50,000 for further college education. If you get deployed u make more money and if u stationed overseas u get separation allowance (around $300 monthly).upto $400,000 life insurance. After we join the army we can give language test, unfortunately they don't have it for Nepali but we can give for hindi if we pass they pay us extra $300 monthly.30 days paid vacation yearly. A lot of 4 days weekend.Even on regular week u just work from monday -thursday and friday is half-day.

Cons: sometimes it sucks. You just have to follow orders. We don't make decision we just follow orders. whatever high ranks tell us we have to execute.sometimes you have to work overtime and on weekends too but don't get single penny for that.Sometimes you have to go to field for weeks or a month.Without showers and hot food, work long hours on dirt.
