Today, In Nepal we hear about road expansion a lot. Government demolishing houses for expansion of roads around Kathmandu Valley;creating pollution through dirt's and dust and adding more to traffic hazard's. However, government of Nepal is not looking at Sustainable way of reducing the traffic jam's. Government of Nepal can reduce traffic jam's by adding more bicycle lane's around Kathmandu valley. Giving more priority to Cyclist can help reduce traffic congestion, and reduce fuel dependency. As this being a short term goal, in long-term government of Nepal can reduce traffic congestion by constructing metro around Kathmandu valley. For more detail advantages of bike lane please watch following video. Please do not forget to comment your thoughts.

@nepalst.louis....I second your thoughts. However, Kathmandu has lots of problem and these problems are like chain reaction! You cannot fix one problem without solving the other. Last time when I was in Kathmandu, I started crossing the road while walking signal was on, but a tempo started hunking me and started running over me. I started running! Now, you can imagine where pedestrians are not respected what will the situation for cylists! This is the problem of culture as a result of poor education system. Second, govenment of Nepal should start thinking how to handle the over crowded population of Kathamandu. Kathmandu is highly densed. Where side walks are used to sell vegetables, what will happen to bycyle lane? You can imagine yourself. Kathmandu has become too centralised and people want to live here for many resons creating over crowding. So, my suggestion to government of Nepal  is to decentralise Nepal. Also, I think it's time to create a new capital somewhere else. Kathmandu is in dilapidated condition and needs some rest!

I heard that they are having a bicycle lane in the ringroad expansion project. Further I heard that the outer ringroad deal couldn't be reached, it is definitely a sad thing because that would atleast have made some of the peoples life easier. Further, decentralization is a good thing. If decentralized is done without proper planning we will create more Kathmandu around the country. And the most important thing as Ujl mentioned is to change the culture that we live in. We should educate our people. Before even starting to settle people and let them build their houses, we need to do proper planning or our land by educating them and laying out proper planning for water, road , drainage, electricity and many more.

We need few international airports in Nepal, unfortunately we hardly managing one. One reason people are crowded in Kathmandu because its only place to fly abroad and land incoming tourists. All cities of Nepal are not planned for 50/100 years. We try to control the situation (not solve) once problem started (for example demolish buildings when traffic increased). Cyclist, motor bike rider and pedestrians have almost zero rights than truck, bus and car drivers. They kill pedestrian if he/she is just injured (to minimize liability). Technology and development do more harm than benefits when public are not enough civilized. And also Nepalese people feel shame to ride bicycle when they can afford to drive foreign cars with foreign imported highly priced kerosene mixed petrol/gas.

I think the Dutch did a massive protests and brought upon a "revolution" for the rights of the bicyclists. We might need something similar in Nepal, after all, we are very experienced in that front.

For city like KTM where 30 cars being sold every day. People don't care what will happen and for the future. They only care about show off their status. Its very difficult to teach "veda" janta............................

Our gvt has best plan to develop and decentralize infrastructure.First they bring ethinic based federalism in Nepal. After that Ktm for Newar, khasan for chhetri, magar back to magarat, rai back to kirat, limbu back to limbuwan, madeshi back to madhes and Bahuns back to India. After that Nepal will be developed. When everyone go back to their original place then it will be easy for them to develop.Probably everybody need to go back to Africa.
