Sitting idly in Baluwataar gully with friends and waiting to tease girls was our weekend activity back home. Occasionally we would get the pleasure of harassing local “madhise” and robbing him of his fruits and stuffs. We didn’t care much for them, their pleas would go unheard not just through ours but any of the passerby’s ears too. We had a Mahato friend at school we used to call, you guessed it, “dhoti.” I don’t think we treated him that badly but it was clear he wasn’t one of us either.

Things have changed. I now realized how wrong I was. It never occurred that they share the same citizen rights that we did, they were merely from a different part of the country and spoke in funny hindi accent. “Madhise” became madhesi and “dhoti” became Mahato ji.

This awareness was one of the biggest accomplishment, at least for me, from the recent “people revolution.”  I have learnt to respect the diversity that we have in our small country. Through another Madhesi activist, Mr. Bhagat, I have learnt that terai is responsible for the biggest share of the nation’s GDP yet it gets no reciprocal attention from the state.

We now understand and are ready to apologize for all the mistreats and welcome the fellow citizens. Is it too much to ask that they do the same? “One madhes state” is nothing more than a ploy to divide the country, much like the Kirat state or any other state formed merely from ethnic point of view. We certainly don’t want another Bosnia, we simply cannot afford it in a small country like ours. So I ask, why are the Madhesi parties hell bent on getting this demand accepted? almost to a point that it has become not just a bargaining tool but a ransom money holding the country in hostage. I think it is upto the Madhesi brothers now to tell their leaders not to divide the country like this. You know they will flow in the direction of the masses.  Say no to “one Madhes state.”

Let us all learn to respect others, human right and giving what we expect others to give has to be educated in Nepalese childrens right from the lap of parents to schools and society.

Human beings, Nepalese and common identity are key and minority harrassment comes with consequences and bad karma. Lt us try to make Nepal free from discrimination and hatred if we are to prosper collectively.

Thanks for realizing, it is not your mistake but it is our religion and our culture. Regarding the discrimination and looking down to people with black skin is highest in Kathmandu valley. The cast system created the discrimination and to look people down and just getting college degree does not help to swipe away the culture we have inherited from the day one of our birth. I do remember that my colleague was dark and when he wanted to take taxi many ignored and one said " खाली नही है " then he yells back "कस्लाई भनेको " खाली नही है "भनेर. He just laugh and shoot out.

I am not in favour of the maoist's division of Nepal. But the truth is we look people down and it is engraved in our brain as part of our  religion and culture which is still there even residing aboard with highest educational  achievement. Only wisdom can help to reconcile this issue.

The thing that I hated most was when people harrass poor people like chana chatpate, vegetable vendors etc. One day I was travelling to the states, and I was approached by two Madhesi men of my age to help them in filling out the forms. I was shocked to find that though they were from Janakpur, they were not educated. They were not confident at all. When I asked them to show their passport, their hands were trembling. It seemed to me as if they were afraid something wrong might happen and they wouldn't be allowed to board the plane. I was of their age, I grew up in a rural Nepal too, but I was a lot different (lucky and confident) than them.

I have always supported their rights, but like you said, I think what our govt must do is the followings:

1. Put tons of money in Madhesi village for education. Give vouchers if they want to go to english school to pay a part of their tuition.
2. Madhesi girls have to be given tons of protection. They should be encouraged to join bureaucracy, police and army.
3. And any man who insults Madhesi in the streets should  be put in custody for a few days. Just to teach some lessons.

I don't think it is our religion that teaches us hatred towards them. In fact, lots of Mishra, Tripathi, Jha have found acceptance in our mountains and they were there since long. I think it is our fear of India that led us to treat them like this. Also in the past, we didn't travel much and thought all of them were foreigners. But we must change it. A country divided among itself can't prosper.

I am against ek pradesh thingy, of course. But I am all for equality. This is the way to make our country prosperous.

Let me clear some things here. We are talking about 2 things here. 1) Nepali madeshe and 2) Indians who look like Nepali madeshes but are not Nepali citizen.

Most chana chatpates, kera wala, plummers are Indian citizens who claim to be madeshes. Madeshes would rather stay in tarai and be poor than to come down to kathmandu and sell chana chatpates. It's the same thing like how you would not mind to spend thousands of dollars and come to usa and mop a gas station's floor but you would not work in a store in Nepal for somebody. Nepal is strongly suffering by Indian invasion, political, economic, cultural and even population invasion. Most of these indians claim to be madeshe from gaur, sarlahi etc to gain respect from you. They usually come from UP, Udessa, etc

However, it does not justify to torture an indian either. I am sure we would not like our Nepali brothers to get tortured in India and likewise we should not torture any poor people who are Nepali or Indian or anything.

This is one great thing about America, ie we learn to respect everyone.

Now DWI bro realizes that it is wrong, once the khaireeeeeees started treating him like madhise i.e second class human beings. we are one of the most racist societies of the world. Good thing that the new generation is learning it.

Good to know that most of us agree to the sentiments. I would love to see what a madhesi friend has to say on this topic.

K.C. jee's article is very informative, I just wished it had embraced the madhesi community more. The gist of the article might be to unite people but the approach seems very separative. It's not me vs you, it's US.

Pire, your points are worth considering. I would even venture on saying that Madhesh should get more focus from the federal government, significantly more. But first and foremost they should be given the dignity of a common Nepali citizen.

Deepak554 I am not sure where you got that conclusion from. As far as I know those vendors knew maithili and local dialects of Gaur. Few might have been from India, but I hate to break it to you, most of those madhesi vendors are our own Nepalese.

half_kattu, had the "khaires" treated me like how I treated Madhesis, I wouldn't have continued living in US. Believe me we were much worse. And yes, coming to US made me realize it more, not because of how I was treated, but seeing so many cultures and races and being exposed to an open media that discussed the prevalent race issues made me aware of what we had back home was racism.

One last thing I want to add is whatever the motive maybe I admire the fact that the largest party of Nepal clearly pointed out that One Madhes State is completely unacceptable. If they change their stance I would lose whatever remaining respect I have for them.

Vote for One Nepali state.

Before this topic leads to a totally different discussion, I want to realign the focus of the topic and would appreciate any comments from our Madhesi friends as well as other folks on the deman of one madhes state.
