What are your day-to-day responsibilities at the VC firm?
And most importantly how long have you been doing this?
Depending on your answer I could give you some clues as to what your expectation should be.

Internship is always possible if you have got the right package.
What is your background? Finance is quite broad- in which area do you think you fit in?
One way to really impress your recruiter is to run them through a scenario that involves a current event. To that end, please tell me an issue or a case study in finance where it clearly shows that you are passionate, articulate, thorough, and have convictions toward the end result.
This doesn't have to be very long by the way- I can try to give you some feedback on your readiness if you wish...

It just means you should have the right fit- every internship or a position has a certain vibe which your recruiter thinks that you can fill.
As a student your foremost points are that you are academically sound (i.e. have above average marks), you have done a lot of practical case studies, participate either in extracurriculars or part-time job related to your major, and a bonus would be if you are an active committee member of a club.
I find interpersonal skills a highly-sought after skill that many lack- and this is true for any internship, grad job or an experienced position.
Which companies would you be applying to?
