D doesn't affect your status. If you are taking exactly 12 credits and get an F, I believe it does affect your status, because F means you didn't complete 12 credits. If you have 16 credits, got an F on a 4 credit course, then you are safe because it still satisfies 12 credit completion.

But even if he retakes it will hamper his score right? But status wish I believe you are safe.

If you are getting scholarship, then possibly you can be off from this. Otherwise overall GPA will not affect anywhere.

puzzeled_life , i think you should be okay in terms of immigration status. to be legal in status, you should not leave the class, and take the exam no matter what letter grade you get. Just registering and paying fee does not mean you are a valied status student, your transcript should show a grade even its D or F or whatever.

I got one D. I still had 3.5 GPA in spite of that, and no one said anything to me about it. The course was a core course, and the undergrad advisor cursed me for a moment before he realised that the bitch gave D to some others too, one of them was american superstar of the department.

When I applied for grad school, I still made into a good school. I had to scrounge for a great excuse, however, while writing for application paper.

Even if you get F and you had 12 credits for that semester only, that shouldn't affect your status.
