Caste system in nepal is not obstrusive 4 me but the things that really bothers me is the discrimination, superstitious thought n demon act .when i pass away through some postings under this thread then i came to notice that some ppl perceived that this problem can b solved through education ...According me ,under the influences of back days which i have passed, wht i have reckon is its not the education to solve this problem but its the acceptance of one person by other through the heart. here arrised the topic abt personality.here may me many person among us too...who lectured a lot abt giving damn on caste but if u try to know them in real they too discriminate one-another through surname.many ppl here ,might say ppl do this n that but i hate it...when a time came 4 them 2 face it in their own most of them will move a steep back...they will blame to society as i m a social bound creature so i can't go against social norms...ehe..funny nah???when they don't have enough courage to face reality they search a reason for offending.Education brings abilty but not necessarily it can develop reasonable person.there r ver-very few ppl who implement the book-gained knowledge into real life.very less . reading books might make ppl literate but not a lover.accepting n treating equally everyone is only one solution for this.but the quarry is who will move ahead???who wil lead it???who has enough courage to master it???everyone r good in blabbering not there is a zero action...ehe..me too included in this blabbering list ,anyway.

if anyone wills to cure this caste discriminating system then they have to start it first.if anyone seeks change then that particular person sud always move ahead 4rm his follower .Seeker sud always have a potential of representatives not of a follower.B courageous, take a chance n b a example so that ppl can b inspired .inspiration can gathered numerous assistants resulting a association.A leader with motto is required here to eradicate this system.

bhanchha ni manchhe haru"sirakk bhitra ghushi takkye ra kahi hune wala chaina ,garne manchhe maidan ma utrinu parchha"

Origin of caste system in Nepal:

When Muslim invaded western north india such as a "Rajesthan" then Indian migrated as Asylums to Nepal from these area of India. So then, Rajesthani brahmin brought Caste system, Saathi pratha, Child marriage, Hindu Religion, Dorry system, Slavery etc and practiced in Nepalese society.

(1) Brahmin Caste: Neupane, Koirala, Paudel, Nirwala, Chiluwal, Adhikari, Dhakal etc.

(2) Chetri Caste: Shaha, Rana, Malla, Thapa, Basnet, Khadka, Karki etc.

(3) Basya Caste: Newar, Raj Bansis etc.

(4) Sudra Caste: Damai, Kaami, Sunawar, Sarki etc.

Hmmm...quite ideological, this thread is. Caste in Nepal has little to do with laws, as much as class in the UK has little to do with laws. Its carved in the minds of people; personally, would you marry a guy/girl who were discarded as untouchables, people grouped under Sarki, Damai, kami, Kasai...If you would, I'm glad you are out of the vicious circle of conservatism. If you wouldnt , then there is no point alleging others because someone who has seen much of the world stills lulls in the 16 century system Nepal, what will the 80% rural population who have never went out of their way to educate themselves, say??

Its easy to say yes, I would marry someone from other caste, but then you would say- oh I would, but my parents you know...yes? Your parents? Who are educated...You would again say, yes, my parents would be fine, but you know the society they live in...So who is the society? Your aunt who teaches in school and educates people? Your next door neighbor who returned back from his studies abroad? I mean, we are talking about the urban population here; you know how conservative women back home are? Not all of them, but the majority. They say 'equal rights for women', but when it really comes to equal rights, you will see these women employ a poor low caste woman as her maid at home and treat her like an object. Even the most educated men and women I have met back home have obscure, conservative, opinionated views about caste, and believe me, they are very rigid about it. If thats how the educated and the rich minority behave, what do you expect from the majority poor and uneducated mass? Do we have anything to do with law here? May be, but not as much as we have to do with mass awareness.

No man, I wont marry a girl ethinic group like Kami, Damai, Sarki.. Not becoz I do discriminate them but I can't cope with their profession in long run. How would you find urself if you happen to go and meet your sasura somewhere in SARKI'S SHOP. In that circumstances will I be able to get along with my wife ?... Nepalese still honor joint family environment, and in that situation I think I should create comfortable environment so that my family, my wife, my wife's family and myself would be happy enough to lead the life without glitches. I don't think its discrimination.. Becoz if you guys go and ask a Newar girl to marry a Bahun guy, she will definately turn her back. Its more like being communal in behaviour. But without any doubt extreme discrimination like untouchable, slavery, isolation is inhuman act. I am against such activities.

Ha ha ..Pisces you are funny! Your desire to marry the same caste ppl to be in the 'communal behavior' actually is driven by caste and class motives; if you see your Sasuro working in a Sarki's shop, its embarrasing for you (thats class consciousness speaking). And trying to make a comfortable environment for your family members by marrying someone from the same social background is social conservatism (thats caste consciousness).

In either way, you could change things. If you can afford to change your Sasuro's living standards (since you get embarrased to see him deligintly work in Sarki shop), you could invest some capital and expand the market for him (and I hope those who own Bata shoe company in Nepal wouldnt embarrass a general Nepali). And to make your family members comfortable about marrying a girl from another caste, I'm sure you could share her culture and cherish it (like America shares all our cultures) instead of trying to make her fit into Your culture. That will have a happy ending. :)

And the funny thing is, you still advocate a descrimination-less society (yourself being unable to personalize it). That was the core I was trying to get into, about the people in Nepal, who advocate it with all their energy, but when it comes to making a real change starting from their own lives, thats it!

What do you think?

What's wrong with visiting a "Sasura in the SARKI's shop"???? If you didn't already know there is such thing as "dignity of labour".

Better than visiting one in the Smugglar's Mahal!!!

DC girl: Great points on society and its stratifications.

Sitara, yeah, you act being modest here. You can write whatever you want to here. But would you apply that in your real life? When it comes to marrying a guy whose father is shoe maker, I'm sure you will step back. Duh. You want to seek attention being a woman with all good qualities. Talk about what we do in practice. Get real.

People don't go looking for Sarki's sons or daughters to get married. but if you happen to meet someone and you fall in love and you believe that he/she is the one you want to spend rest of the life with, would yo back down if you find out then his/her father is such? the answer should be no! if you don't agree then you have issues and seek professional help.

People don't go looking for their sons. true. Also, people get attracted with him or her. Try to get close with him or her. The moment they will know about their background, they will back off before falling in love with him or her. Speak your heart. Get real.

Dc Maiya, you got strong word but I outspoke the fact. Do you think just by marrying for different group will eliminate racial discrimination? I don't want to marry newari girl simply becoz I think can't adjust with cultural behevior.. Hellooooooooooo its not discrimination.. Well let me ask you DC, will you marry butcher guy (we call kasai) unless you don't belong to same community? I am not humiliating there profession but simply I can't adjust with their profession and culture, only I happen to have family relation with them. Won't you be embarrase when your husband own Slaughter house at the corner of one galli in Nepal ? I didn't say I won't eat or drink what they touch, I am not that absurd,, if I am then I am commiting racial discrimination.

But tell you what, I am single, if I fall in someboy and later find out she belongs to so called Discriminated Community, I won't dump her..

I just read the thread, most intellectual here think marriage is solution. Fact is we act emotional and try to be liberal on saying and writing only, but when it happen to take action everybody steps back..Life is not as simple as HINDI MOVIE.. And we can't simplify just becoz we are in America....ANd you are talking about American, LOL who says america shares all our cultures?.. What cultures do you find in America? I don't know which part of land you are in, but here in my place I have encountered massive number conservative American (rich and famous). DC try one rich white ash, and lets see he will fart on u or not.. U are in dillema, believe me, Americans are very racial unless he/she is not true americans or penny saver white thrash.

DC don't say hai that you have nice American BoyFren ... May be he is scared of getting divorce from White girl and chose you.. BTW recent statistic tells, most low class american men want to marry Asian just becoz they think Asian are loyal and have kiss ass attitude.

Sitara, will you marry me.. I am goin back to nepal and will start same work as PODE? Lets see how you will cope with that.... Don't you guys try to be super human. Dui achar baicharik kura lekhdai ma hazur Mahan hunuhunna.. You want to bring change right? then set an example..For moment lets not talk about race, but what about marrying prostitute and aids victim.. Is it discrimination not to marry them ?

Discrimination didn't come along with race.. Main coz of this epedimic is poverty... you will more than happy to marry white guys right, you know why? becoz u think they are rich. Thats why we are in America and tryin to be like them .. Lets say you are in Iraq (I know you wont go there) for some voluteer purpose, you find somebody good lookin and appealing and he purpose you.. will you marry him? No you won't becoz he is Muslim faggot..

Pisces ji:

Being a PODE is not a crime; the fact that you discriminate based on your prejudice is a
moral crime. NO, I would not marry a prejudiced man, regardless of caste, class, race, ethnicity.

By the way... does love come into your equation of marriage; it does in mine... regardless of all the above!

It is easy to preach but hard to practice. Let us start from here itself let us encourage those willing to cross caste barriers to set up life. Dc nicely narated scores of excuses we will find to run away if had to set an example, here I am being general and the category includes likes of me. However, as the system was there for a long time, we should be carefull in uprooting it slowly but precisely. Any attempt to vigorously uproot it at a jerk can have negative impact on the society.

Thugged out Ji: hey again!

"What about hot, raunchy sex? Just curious"... Absolutely, if love is involved!

Kalekrishna ji:

How would you determine between who is preaching and who has experienced the societal taboos?!

Pisces, you must be blinded by the few who go after Skin color rather than being rational. For your information, personally, like Sitara said, color, creed, caste, class doesnt matter to me. If I discover that he is the guy who I can spend the rest of my life with, I will marry a Pode or Kasai who has a 'Kukhura Masu Pasal' at a corner of a galli in Nepal. You know why? Because I, have the capacity to change.

Pisces, I'm glad you're bringing our biases out. I have some biases of my own, like, I could be born poor, but I would very much like to change my Class status if I can. Like everybody else, I would like to spend my life comfortably, not working in a 'Kukhura ko pasal'. Realistically, like most of us, I am ambitious. That doesnt mean I would give up liking a Pode, because his Class and Social status that all of us are so disgusted about, I have the capacity to change. Its not a crime to be born poor, to be born as a Muslim, to be born as a Pode.

I wouldnt be embarrased to open a butcher shop myself next to some galli in Kathmandu, its labor, its work (dont you know most of us here work our ass off washing dishes in restaurants?? Where does your (or anyone else's) embarrassment go then?). But as said earlier, I have my weaknesses, the greatest one is to be able to change my Class status. But dont worry, dirty jokes like Marrying a rich American doesnt even cross my mind. I believe in my own dignity and hard work.

Chao!

And Pisces, I say America shares cultures from around the world because whether or not people around you really like your culture, but you havent been bumped out of the US just because you are dark skinned, or you speak funny or your hair is black.

Have you seen any Africans/Americans/Chinese treated equally like Nepalese in Nepal? They either get duped, harrassed or used for personal advantage by our fellow friends back home. Worst, you must have seen guys in Thamel wanting to lure tourists for sex, money and whatever advantage they get from them. At least here in the US, you can whine about Americans and still live in their land and go to their schools or even work at their companies and get paid!!

KaleKrishna, I dont see myself narrating, worst of all, excuses...anyways, yeah, if there ever comes a time that I would have to publicly set an example in Sajha forum, I will invite you first to listen to my story...
