I was watching rugby world cup last month. I have also watched NFL. But for me NFL is the worst game in the world. It lacks global appeal.
These players wear clothes as if they are going to war. It is not a manly game. These guys are protected from everywhere. Watch rugby for sometime and you will find NFL as the most boring game on the planet.
ONLY THING GOOD ABOUT NFL IS THE CHEERLEADERS AND THE MUSIC THEY PLAY IN BETWEEN.
Not surprisingly these players are retarded who have absolutely no knowlege about the world.
My two cents.

Being in us and for all political and diplomatic reason, I never could shun American football. It is the most watched domestic
league in the world with average of 65000 spectators in the stand, btw German bundesliga is a distant second with 25000 spectators, according to the one newspaper which I read last yr:p. The final of the league or super bowl is one of the most viewed game andone of the most financially success game and the league of the world. Though I am not a big fan of it but I do have enjoyedmost of the games I have watched. But saying all these, American football is not one of the technically good games in theworld. It is just an average game. Here are the reasons:
1. All the moves and plays are co-ordinate, planned and practiced exactly well before the game. Hence it is just like the grand finale of the rehearsal. In other games, strategic plans are developed but it has to be molded according to the situation of the game since most of the time there are no stoppage time.
2. There are so many players, that you wonder if it’s a team. You can imagine what would happen to soccer, if a
particular player could just hit from one position or from one range, what if all the defenders could come to play when ball is in opponent’s feet. Due to this, the game has lost its charm since even die hard fans have terrible time remembering names of all the players. Hence very few players get the appraisal, though it is touted to be the team game.
3. The physique of the player is some important. In other words everybody got be huge. Six foot player are
considered to be petite. Now how can this be one of the best sports if it cannot encompass most of the people if not all? Though stamina and speed are inevitable needs of every player of every game, a particular size can be counter balance with other skills. Small size players cannot compete in this game. Hence, for Asian people, it will never be a passion.
4. To say this is fast game (as another blogger mentioned here) to say like pro-wrestling is the highest form of
wrestling. With the amount of stoppage time and those breaks, how can it be considered fast? Minimum of four
stoppage time per play. Its equivalent to taking free kicks every time in soccer.
I'd just wrap up by saying that its fun to watch but our footbal is distant king of sport Btw: Go Patriots

I cannot agree more with Maverick. My uncle is an avid fan of the cowboys since he was here in the late '70s. During thanksgiving game between the 'Boys (his team) and the Broncos (my team) - can't remember the exact year, but it was during or after the World Cup of 2002. He asked me, which one is tougher (player POV) to play - football or soccer. I readily, without any hesitation, answered Soccer. The only reason is because of the Game-Time Endurance. In Soccer, forget getting that frequent breaks as in Football. Both Offense and Defense gets at least 40 seconds before they start another play. Hell No in Soccer. And how about those mid-fielders running back and forth, those 100 yarders all the time. I hate calling the game soccer, but hey for the ease of understanding what we are talking about, i guess it is okay.
If there are two simultaneous great games of soccer and football at the same time - say for example, the superbowl and the champion league final or, broncos game and barca game, i am gonna have to have two tvs or a tv and a computer or something for me to watch both the games at the same time.
2-3 weeks ago, we did the same. i am here in baltimore at friends' so, obviously the baltimore game on tv. broncos was also playing the same time and a hour earlier barca's game was on. so, we had two Laptops on the coffee table, and the giant tv behind it. so, for me actually, there is no difference. they both give me the same chills during the game.
Yes and when 1.5 billion people (1/4th of the world population) watch the world cup final at the same time, no doubt that it is the king of sports. But, Superbowl is also watched by over 90 millions people (1/3rd of the US population). In Soccer you need to maintain only 22 players per team, which most countries in the world can afford and hence an International sports. In Football, you need to maintain 54 players - 54 big players, which only the US can afford in professional sports and hence an American Sports. That is one reason, why Football cannot go anywhere else other than the US. I hope that makes sense to all.
peace and enjoy.

i understand the basics of the NFL game. the QB takes the ball and either passes to Receiver or he runs with the ball. and the opponent team try to tackle and take the ball away. i just dont understand what kind of strategy u need for that. it just seems sooo easy and LUCK.. all u need to win is LUCK and BIG n Fast player.
and whats up with all these never ending time-outs and break.. it seems soooo SLOW paced compared to (soccer).. in soccer the only time they stop is when there is foul or halftime or gameover.. NFL they stop the game every few minutes.. what kind of game is that...and the worst thing is they have so many commercials during the breaks. to play professional NFL it seems u dont even need stamina coz u get short breaks every 2 mins or so.
in my opinion that is not professional player.. soccer is about stamina, strenght, speed, heading ability.. it is more all rounded. in soccer we dont get breaks so many times. u have to be on your toes all the time. if u relax even for 1 second the other team can get the ball past u and score...
that is why i like soccer.. more action, more strategy, and just beautiful to watch.. and Im not talking about MLS soccer.. watch the Spanish Premiera league, English Premier league, Italian Serie A and then u will learn to enjoy soccer.
actually the only reason i watch NBA, NFL is so i can watch the chwaakkk cheerleaders.. specially the NBA cheerleaders... love em.. that is something soccer can take from america.

It all depends on you. I think the title would have been better if the originator of this tread has stated by adding "in my opinion". I grew up watching soccer and cricket and used to watch almost every game of those two sports. After coming here and knowing football (NFL, NCAA), I can't imagine living with out it. During my undergraduate days in college I used to work for my college football team (my in college job) and ever since than I have been a big fan of this sports. People who think that football is just a physical game probably don't understand this sport; if you do you will know it is more of a chess match than physical.

soccer is one lame game to watch. just kicking ball here and there . watch it for 90 minutes and there is no score. yes there can be no score after playing for 90 minutes. what a boring game to watch. but I like to play soccer. playing is different thing. I love playing golf too but that doesn't mean that i like to watch golf.

watching sports like NFL makes me sleepy and lazy. those so called pro atheletes need breaks n timeouts every few minutes.. theeres so many commercials. theres those big helmets, cant even see players faces.. who is who hard to tell when u watching... compare that with sport like soccer, it is like watching a super smash hit movie on tv.. u just watch and there is never ending action until halftime. .then u hurry and go bathroom and whatever u need and hurry back and watch the rest of the game 100% concentration. that is called true sports.

Well, not that i am defending the NFL, but I am an avid sports fan of all sorts of sports. In my opinion there aren't any sports that is not exciting.
Anyways, i just want to clarify latoboy's following statement:
"I understand the basics of the NFL game. the QB takes the ball and either passes to Receiver or he runs with the ball. and the opponent team try to tackle and take the ball away. i just dont understand what kind of strategy u need for that. it just seems sooo easy and LUCK.. all u need to win is LUCK and BIG n Fast player".
A simplest strategy for you. Say, in your example, the QB decides to pass the ball @ own 32, is 2nd and 8 after the first down was a running play that resulted in a gain of 2 yards. So, there he forms a 3-man out (2 on the left adn 1 on the right) shotgun formation, with a half back, a little behind him. Before the snap, there is an audible and the half back is in motion, goes forward to the right and positions himself next to the TE. Now, there are possible 5 receivers, and the goal is to gain at least 8 yards.
There are so many things to consider here. The tight-end (in the right) can go forward 4 yards and run diagonally towards left and catch the ball at 40 yards (quick short pass). The half back that was in motion can stay the Line of scrimage and block a LB or safety from entering the pocket. The two outs in the left can go all the way towards 60 or 70 or more yard line for a surprise hail mary. The other receiver in the right can go ahead and fool the corner back towards him, letting the TE have a free zone in the middle.
Remember the QB has already moved to the back from the Line of Scrimage about 5-8 yards and is inside the pocket. the defense already knew it was a pass play so, they play cover instead of the secondaries and MLB firing towards the QB. In most cases a QB can survive in the pocket for about 5 seconds (sometimes more as in NE or IND). The strategy was to pass the ball to the TE. So, he has less than 5 seconds to decide if the play is possible, that is, the TE has/will have enough room to catch the ball. If not, then, he will have to look for other options - Field Vision. If the zone is free, then, he will have to accurately calculate the amount of force he is gonna have to put on that ball and the angle of the tragectory for him to throw the ball from 26 yard line to 40 yard line. If the zone is not free, then he will have look further to the right and left and see if the receivers are free. Or if the pocket in the front have a hole, he can run the ball himself to gain a few yards rather than throw an incomplete pass or even an interception. All these actions are determined even before the ball is snapped. You make a plan and then play. But sometimes, QBs gonna have to change the play after the snap. That's why Dungy-Manning and Belichick-Brady combination have been so successful in recent years.
This is just one play, and the option for this play is not even close to complete with my example. I cannot think of any other sports that has this many strategy - Chess?. So many offensive formations and plays and equal or more defensive ones. So many rules to follow. Dude this game is not a joke and the rules change all the time to suit the needs of time and technology. For example, starting this year the QB cannot spike the ball other than in the Red Zone. You see, spiking the ball itself is a strategy. it will stop the clock on a 1st, 2nd or 3rd down when the team doesn't have any time-outs left. They loose a down but, hey the clock is stopped. The coach can call a time-out just before the snap during a field goal attempt to break the kicker's concentration (as in Denver v Buffalo, this year). You might want to watch a game (this monday nite, green bay v denver), with someone, who can explain you each play. how it was planned, how it could have failed, why it succeeded, etc. why run in a third down? why go for the 4th down? why let a safety and give the other two points, instead of punting, at own 1 yard line? Onsite kick? Run the Play Clock? Fire Gaps? Blitz? Spy Cover? Power-I formation? Nickel package against shotgun? Dime for any pass-play? 5-2, 4-3 against Run? The list is so many... These aspects, most people find uninteresting because, there just are too many things to follow. Simpler rules might have made this game popular world wide. But it is not, because it was designed like that.
A pure game of strategy. Coach and Quarter Backs must be synchronous in calling each play. Every play is equally important as any other plays. The coach is involved in every single play. The QBs have their own coach, and so does all the positions. Defense and Offense have co-ordinators learning the other team from the box above and in the field, and help the coach in identifying newer strategies. So many people are involved. Dude, Football is not a game of LUCK. You just have to be good in that game to win that game. Anyone can beat anyone. There is no surprise TD or a lukcy TD. Even when kicking a Field Goal, the Kicker must analyze the direction of the wind, calculate the amount of force and the angle of tragectory before kicking the ball. And he doesn't do this alone. He has his own kicking coach to help him determine all these.

If you don’t like Football simply don't watch it. Don't come here and say NFL is bad game (First of all, NFL is not a game it is a league, go Google it before you post here anything).
No sport is better or worse, they are simply different. You are showing how dumb and ignorant you are by saying NFL is worst sport in the World.

mr aug25 1997 the person who wrote NFL is worst sport in the world clearly didnt mean that.. come on u should know that... u should know not all nepalis can read/ write english as well as you..
clearly the writer of this thread was saying NFL referring to Football is the worst sport in the world...
me personally i wont say its the worst sport in the world, but in my humble opinion it is among the worst... even watching tennis is more entertaining than Football.
In my book, a sport is a sport when majority of people can play.. they dont have to be tall, short, fat, skinny etc.. where can average person play professional then i will support that sport .. like Soccer... u have tall short skinny fat ... fat players such as Ronaldo from brazil.. and Lampard from england... short like Zola, Deco, messi, maradona.. tall like Peter Crouch.

"In my book, a sport is a sport when majority of people can play.. they dont have to be tall, short, fat, skinny etc.. where can average person play professional ..."
so , you are telling us that these following sports (traditional ones, being played and enjoyed from the antiquities) are also not sports, where average person cannot compete at professional level:
Strength Required: Wrestling, Weightlifting, Discuss Throw.
Dexterity Required: Archery
Intelligence Required: Chess
yes you might argue, with practice and training you can achieve any of the above. Brother, in that case, you can too in American Footbal. Ok, in Chess you'd have to be super intelligent. Training and practice is just not enough.
Average height of International level volleyball or basketball players is certainly above average human height. But, we all enjoy those games - both watch and play. So, in this sport, taller players have huge advantage and are, by your defintion - Sports but you need bigger men in the American Football, and then it is not Sports? Tyo ta bhayena ni mitra.
All, I am trying to say that, in any sports, only the elites can become professional, not average person. I am not saying that your argument is wrong, but it is not correct as well. you see, sports was created for entertainment by those who are most qualified to play them, whether determined by their physic or by their intelligence.
In my book, Sports is a Sports when it has a set of rules and is freely contested between the players/team. It doesn't matter whether the team has men only, women only, men-women combination, fat, tall, short, giant. Doesn't matter.
Malai chahi yo thread sanga pugyo aba. With baseless reason, do not ever ever, ever ever ever call Football a bad sports. You have no idea - absolutely no idea - the beauty and finesse of the game.
Peace and Enjoy.
