Shah, Rana, Singh.....were never muslims in history. They were Rajputs. The Nepali kings were given Shah title by the Emperor of India during the sixteenth century. During 15th, 16th, 17th century, India was primarily ruled by Muslim Emperor's like Babar, Akbar, Shah Jahan etc.

According to Wikipedia, "Shah is a Persian term for a monarch (king or emperor) that has been adopted in many other languages."

Look at the Genealogy of Shah dynasty at - http://www.4dw.net/royalark/Nepal/nepal2.htm

Basically Rai, Rao, Khand, Shah were titles given to kings. For example, Rana is also a title. Their last names could also be written as Kunwar. Singh's are also Thakuris and their religion has never changed from Hindu to Muslim.

Please dont hurt these people for using Muslim Language. They cant help using Urdu coz they were muslims and they changed their religion long long time ago. Hey by the way they were Hindus before that.

Remember till Manabharata Hunduism existed till Afganistan. In mahabharat they had hindu kings in Gandhar. Later Muslims took over and changed all in Afganistan and Pakistan and most of india forcefully to Muslims. So did tha Shahs. Later they changed back to Hindus.

I still see then using Aisiyos and Gaisiyos, khaisiyos and c...isiyos. The worst thing is that they move their hand with that posture, which clearly shows they still adhere to Muslim culture. No wonder they may change back to Muslims tomorrow.

From तँ, तिमी and तपाईं the so called thakuri babu sahebs and maiya saheebas wanted to feel a little more high class so they invented the fourth class of you as in हजुर and all the rest of the स्योस् catagory.

English is such a non discriminatory language where you call a president a YOU and a janitor also YOU. But no, as if the 3 forms of you तँ, तिमी and तपाईं were not enough discriminatory, the great thakuris have to create another form of YOU so that they could separate out who's more रैथाने and who's a commonor.

The next constitution should ban all the चम्चागिरी हजुर सजुर and स्योस् Why is there a need to discriminate who's a better or greater person in language? Why not all just तपाईं or तिमी?

Hi,
Nice thread...but it should have been put in a different way without targeting any particular Nepalese community.
Well, in almost every language there exist this kind of so called different level...of course it may not be that distinct like we have in Nepal..but in English there is always Queen's language...and there exists still few Brits, Scotts and other people who uses English in a different form for being more polite and respectful..and yeah besides, there is French, Italian , Spanish and other languages which has some respectful way of speaking..though not very difffernt from the casual ones.Even the socialist nordic countries have some variation in their language when they speak to someone with respect. So it is just a twist in the language...and we should be proud that our language has different forms and protocols of speaking...of course some not so good sides are always there.
And I find all these levels or so called variation of Nepalese Language very beautiful..and I agree that this kind of languages should stick around the personal homes or certain community.when communicating in public in general a plain simple Nepali shud be spoken...but there is nothing funny about all this...use it properly and u will love it...every word is so beautiful...elegant yet simple.

i have nothin to say. i m not that smart enough to discuss with brilliants of nepal in sajha. you know where chettris originated from n we know nothing. please give us more of urs knowledge. i know nothin still i jus want to share my poor knowledge with smarties. Thakuris have half indian blood thats true. Thakuris means royal. shah rulers have bloods from different indian thakuris but half of it is from nepal. paras shah's wife Himani is thakuri from rajasthan. Her mother is from nepal. In bauns family they use "timi" to pay respect to elders. thakuris took that aaiso gaiso but they cant be muslim. even a average man or woman turned muslim cant b hindu later, might b but in rare case. there r proofs that a muslim turned hindu became muslim again. like dr mohammad mousin of nepal. Their family came from afghanistan but they got mixed up with newars of kirtipur. later they came to know that they were muslim so became muslim again. In nepal centuries back no one were hindu. ppl were divided into caste according to theirs job after they became hindu. I m a chettri still i say there r no pure chettris. bauns n chettris long time before r same. "thapa chettri" came from Aryal like 600 years before. there was a karki baun king in kaski. n kirats long time before at the period of yalambar were aryans who later got mixed up with mongoloids. n ppl who lived in nepal were later called nepali. india is mixture of indo-euro race. There is a simple migration rule, ppl livin in certain area chooses same kind of land scape n weather. its all i have. i m sorry if i opened my small mouth. i feel like a gold fish infront of blue whale. accept my apologies if i tried to abort urs vast knowledge. thank u

Difference is not always good specially when it's discriminatory. Why is there a need to differentiate speech from commoners. Cleopatra your sarkars need and demand respect in the form of hajur sajur chakadibaaji. They want to portray themselves as better human beings than others who they (and you) term as 'commoners'.

We have to rise above these cultural practices which promote a feudal system.

thank you dharare kancha for that bit of history...

and I think most of are getting carried away into wrong directions....

Whether muslim or not I think Urdu is the most beaustiful language in the world...and I thingk thats where all the syos rrots from - URDU...there's nothing wrong in trying to better our speeches.....

e.g. would you prefer it if someone calls you "ta" or "timi".like in urdu "aap" sounds so much better than " tum" or "tere".. but i guess its upto the user..some feel much closer to each other using "ta"

In english too there are cordial speeches.. you can speak call your dad / mom/ whoever - "yo" , "Hey Jonh", Mrs. Smith or mom or whatver but there is definetly the cordial landguage..

Living in Boston ..although a city in a Democratic state..there are lots of aristocrtatic families out here.....they never say you..they say "yourself" ,,.and the rest of the speech gets fancier....English is no different than Nepali..you just have different dialects everywhere

Maybe two different forms of YOU is ok, but have FOUR??? that is just too much. We already had 3 to begin with and which is taught in school. Having this fourth form of sycophant YOU is not necessary. Just my humble opinion.

1) aaisyo, gaisyo are pretty common in almost all chhetris and few other families that i have come across.

2) sawari bhayo, bhuja jynuar garibaksyo, aaibaksyo, gaibaksyo are more common among thakuris/ranas.

3) yehaan aaija sale gadha bhate are common among friends of any caste.

i have a friend, who happens to be a grandchild of a great infamous -JBR - the so called 'A' category. this is how we talk with each other even today!

me: oie ke chha tero haalkhabar, danka?

my friend: kata harai raa mu--i! hallayera basi raa chhas ki kya ho ta mach ---i! :P

i am really close to my friend and we absolutely love name calling and stuffs! :P

oohi hitaishi
LooTe
PS....as my bud, captain said, DOES IT EVEN MATTER???? MULA AMAZING !!!! :P

Even in Tibetan language there is huge difference between how aristocrat Tibetans talk vs. the common mass. Ask any knowledgeable Tibetan person.

Also this is seen in Chinese culture. They have various tones according to their perspective regions like Cantonese, Mandarin, Hakka etc., and then their aristocrats have their own way of speaking.
