Not sure how many of you are in my shoe, but I am dead bored with corporate IT job, loosing complete interest on it, and not sure what I want to do next? Has anyone faced same situation, what u guys did?

How many years did you work in IT?

Seven yrs now, straight out from university.

I am in software development since last 14 years. Still doing. Imagine my situation. No way out.

Change the job. Switch domains. There are still new things to learn.

I really enjoyed when I first joined the project they were building the whole platform from the scratch. It was like a start up company. The whole environment was really good. You need something they will buy that tool or software for you. You just need to show its prospects.

After 1 year the platform was delivered and went live to production. And now after 3 years. I barely code. I just spend more time explaining shit to the support and clients. So 5 hours a day I will be joining bridge calls and replying emails and telling people that is now how it works and explaining designs and stuffs.

At this time I really need to change project.

How much would be the salary for those with 10+ years of exprience in software development?

Let's not drive this thread toward salary, I am trying to see how many people felt the way I fell on their career path and what they did, we can talk about money somewhere else.

17 years and going. Not a whole lot of complaint for me at the moment. There were ups and downs. Back in the early days I used to do two men job (dui Jana ko kam).Nowadays if anyone asks me to do any extra work I get pissed off.

I still write code but not as much. Digging deep into the code and solving problems give me some kind of job satisfaction.

If I had to change job I would be a pilot - but too late for me now.

same shit different day, bored, enjoyed only for 2 yrs,

I was working on one field for like 3 yrs and got bored.. Totally furstated, I was offered fulltime after one year and I toook it . Thought now my life is set but after 2 yrs you had nothing new everyday same shit , no learning no gaining . I was so frustated that i decided to quit the fulltime job and change my technology and now i am working as a contractor and i am loving it not sure how long will it last but so far i love it. It might help you. Sometime benefits or salary or luxury does not play any role. You simply get tired and all you have to do is find something new even if you have to start from scratch it worth it.

you should not be working on same project or same company in IT for more than 3 years. It has been researched and specially true in IT. It's really bad for your career and your mind. I was in your shoe before and began to feel bored after 3 years in same project. After I changed the job I am again happy now. But don't change the job just because you are bored. Weigh different option like salary, work life balance etc. But you will hit the ceiling soon as you grow and then you will be more involved toward management rather than coding.

@Icanfly: 17 effing years. OMFG..... I am a rookie in the IT field and I feel inferior and jealous whenever I see my supervisor and managers who knows lots of things about the project or at least they pretend to. I feel like I wish I had their knowledge but I satisfy myself by saying that they've been doing this from long time and they probably enjoy their job. But it looks like they're in the same boat.

For me the problem is more around attention and concentration. I cannot concentrate for a long stretch. Actually, I cannot even concentrate for a 30 minutes sprint. While at work, I abruptly start using Facebook on my phone, read news or browse irrelevant contents on the web. I can only work fastidiously if a deadline is looming. Frankly, not unless the deadline is EOD today or if I am sure I will get fired if I do not submit by the deadline. I know procrastination is an endemic but for me it is like a bubonic plague. If not for my Attention Deficit Disorder – I’d love my job.

Looks like a lot of people get dead bored, move around a little bit and stick again. The other problem with me is , i am no coder, i am in support cum consulting sector, so cant even join start-up.

Any ways looks like jumping abound job is only way to keep you entertain. i was think, people are doing other stuffs after working several yrs in IT, cause i hardly see anyone above 40 in my work place. Where do they all go, i am pretty sure all of them don't become manager or senior manager.

Got bored of monotonous work?? I wish my life would be that easy as well.
I've been working as a developer for two years. Life was hectic earlier but now getting used to it. But still challenges come every now and then, as project requirements. I need to be familiar with new technologies which can be frustrating sometime. It seems like never ending study. Therefore, I kinda wish I just don't have to code.
But reading this thread, my condition doesn't seem to be that bad, I guess.

Interesting thread. I'll share my own experience.
I have been in IT field for about 10 years now. Switched 4 jobs in 8 years so it wasn't all that bad and enjoyed much of it. Helped me grow super fast. Then I felt tired of proving myself all over again, making new friends and kind of felt comfortable with the last group. I had a lot of good friends in that group, went out for lunch happy hour etc. Work wise there was little growth, but I was able to keep myself satisfied thinking it's the same routine no matter where I go and I have good friends in this group. Like a family outside of home.
This year there were org changes and I was asked to move again to a new organization or find something else. Now that really pissed me off. Because everytime I go to new job I have to prove myself all over again find good friends, learn some new stuffs which may or may not be used in the future. I'm tired of that. And now I am starting to think I wasn't meant for IT at all. I enjoy talking to people and going out etc. Not stay and watch computer all day. I'm also looking for a way out. But I realize everything will get boring after a certain point. The only way out I see is to start my own company or some kind of business. That's not easy either. Especially when you don't have good business partners.
I'm waiting for my day to come when magically I'll meet some incredible people and we all will work on our own company. It's a long shot like winning a lottery ticket, but who knows. I want to keep that hope alive.
In the meantime, I'll give all I have thinking that my parents gave all they had, so why not me. I'll try not to think about work too much and enjoy my evenings and weekends.

You portrayed my story from your pen. I have been in software development since last 13 years. My journey path is the same one you took. I have in many ups and downs in those 13 years. Bad days, layoff, promotions, raise, job changes are the events of my professional life. As you expressed in your story, I am having the same feeling without any new direction in my life. I am always shocked into coding and designing applications.
What else do I have? I am empty other than these coding skills. I even registered my own IT Company without the ability of establishing proper business relationship with the other business entities. My ambition of being entrepreneur has just stayed in my dream. I was never able to succeed with this goal. This resulted in shutting down my registered company.
Then I decided to go back to the square one which is still the source of bread and butter (i.e. coding and database).
What can I do? What else is there for me?
By the way, I am a naturalized US citizen with Secret Clearance. I even had chance to work in Pentagon. What does it give? Nothing, but just a "Hati to dekhaune daat".
So, I am just doing the same old stuff and trying to learn new technologies despite the fact that I need to be in the market to feed my family. I intend to be a happy person, whatever the actual facts are.
I hope your story is much better than mine.

It's been little over 2 years now working in IT field and don't feel like taking this pressure anymore. So I recently partnered with one of my relatives and bought a gas station. I still go to work to my office but I feel I'm more happy and satisfied whenever I'm at my store. I see different kind of people and no freaking pressure. Lets see how long will I stick around with this IT crap as I already got my plan B.
