Last week, SLC results were out and gone. Yea! Gone is how I would like to define it. Let me take you back to the 90's.( If you are not the baby from that millennium, you will not get the feel of it but again we all have our own perks of growing up in our own decades.)

I don't know how kids these days feel about SLC but back in our time ( yes I am as old as a fine wine) the only thing our parents, family, relatives, neighbors, neighbor's cousin and their relatives and then the uncle from your dad's office, and the aunty you meet at the vegetable vendor had one thing and only one thing to say, “ SLC ma ramro marks lyaunu parcha ani pugyo”.

This was the only argument mum used to give,” SLC sakka ani J garna chha garlas”. Like life will be adventure after SLC. To some extend that 3 months were fun. I don't know about others but I had my share of fun of loitering in newroad, bishalbazzar and kingsway (side hanna lai) and attending every concert happening in Kathmandu, having momos in the nook and corners of the city (that is fun for kids from the 90s DUH)

Anyway, the anticipation arises, when there are rumors that the results are going to come either this week or next week. There were never a particular day allocated, like these days they declare the time and date of the results. So, it could be today, tomorrow, Thursday.....Na not on Saturday coz no government work will be done on a holiday.(it has not changed till today, LOL). And what is this app and online thing?? NOOO I come from an era where there is 1 phone line for the whole family, joint or nuclear, that is if you belong to a privileged family of K-town. Or else you have to rely on your neighbor's phone.

During my didi's SLC year, one of my cousin, who is an engineer was hired by NTC on a temporary basis for the data tabulation of the results. He was in the office for 2 whole days, because the government thought these guys know the results and they would leak it out. (you remember the system of board 10?). So that year as soon as he was released, he came to our place at 4:30 in the morning to tell my sister her results. I didnt have that privilege in my year.

And one fine day, you get an early morning call from your super smart aunt who lives in new road that the results are out. I am sure some of your will related to what I am going to say next, is this ritual of rushing to Newroad, to Gorkhapatra Sansthan to get your copy of the newspaper. The entire city has poured into that one place. And people who are not from Kathmandu, would give their relatives their symbol no. to be checked asap.( Coz they would have gotten the papers, in 24 hours to the earliest).

(rumor:- Gorkhapatra Sansthan used to earn so much in that one day which was enough to run the corporation for a year. )

Now, when I got my copy, I looked for my no. in the list of second division, just in case I got REALLY unlucky. When you don't find it there, you are confident that it is surely in the first division if not in the distinction part. Well to dream of distinction during our time was for the top 10 students of the whole batch and I am not one of them. And dhak dhak dhak dhak!! I found my no. YEAAA first division!!!! No GPA shit back then.....plain first division. My mum hugged and squeezed me ( I wonder if they hug their kids for just 1st division these days *ponder * ) and I was happy.

I look back every year when SLC results are out and curse, how the kids are being lied that, it is the end of their struggle when it is JUST the beginning of a stressful life where you need to start thinking of your career and shit. A big f#%k to those people who started this lie. How happy I was when I was throwing a party and treating everyone with laddoos and mithais as if I have won a war. TAIT!

I say Good luck rather than Congratulation these days coz they need it more for the future endeavors! For the rest who have been there done that....well well just remember your own time and laugh about it like I just did :P.

All my uncles and aunts have been flaunting their kids' SLC scores on fb. To my surprise and jealousy, every single one of my cousins got over staggering 90%. And I was wondering what the hell was happening. It turns out that the SLC board actually switched to GPA system and my relatives have been computing percentage by multiplying GPA scores by 25. How convenient

Since last week I am arguing over this issue with everyone.....The quality of the education is like shit and why all this fancy GPA conversion and stuff....I think it is important that the government needs to focus on the quality of the material and the content and how it can provide education to the corners of the country. Sacchi Gaun ko manchey lai GPA kasari bujhaune???

Smaran,
I think most of the people from our generation will relate to the things I have mentioned and cud/sud add more to it. Forget the percentage...I feel my SLC results are invisible right now anyway :D

Yes Amby, I too can very much relate to what you have said here. Nice piece of nostalgic memories. Hanging out around newroad, bishalbazar, basantapur area (kingsway - I thing nothing much was there to hangout in my days) are all part of my beautiful memories. It was fun filled anxiety to rush to gorkhapatra sansthan to fetch a copy of the paper. However, the results would be posted on pillars of the main gate even before they are available for you to buy. Bhugol park used to be the original venue to post the results, but since it was under construction (if i remember it correctly) they had it pasted on the gorkhapatra gate [ yo sab kura garda ta nikkai budho bhaiyecha jasto feel bhayo...toit].

If my memory serves me right, there weren't any distinction columns on Gorkhapatra. P.S @Ambrosia: I was one of the "top 10 students of the whole batch" to score distinction when #Distinction wasn't mainstream yet.

I don't remember such thing as "distinction column" either. There were just 1st, 2nd ad 3rd divisions. How exactly did they define "distinction" anyway?

ok if i am correct i think ambrosia is the batch of maybe couple of years later than mily/c864916/me because as far as i remember we didn't have distinction section separately but couple of years later they started classifying distinction as well.

@Ambrosia: I give you the benefit of the doubt. :)
@mily: Back then, anything above 80% was considered a distinction.
