For a guy in the middle of such a grave disaster, it was surprising to see that cunning look in his eyes.

*************

Lonestar. Just 2 months ago he was the happiest man in the whole world. His childhood crush had finally agreed to marry him, after being dumped by her 'popular' boyfriend. Gump, we gave him that name for his naiveness after the movie Forrest Gump, was the only soldier so happy to be reunited at our base after getting emergency call from the headquarter.

We were taking off from our base camp(of the 75th Infantry Division) to a small French
Province to support our fellow troops, 3rd Armored Division. We were to make a silent entrance in a small forest, notorious for all kinds of deseases. Everybody hung there head during the routine commando address, except Gump, he was elated. Later he told us how happy he was to be united with his 'brothers' and how happily he is expecting
his return to his small town where he could marry the love of his life.

The first time I ever saw Gump so happy was during the time we were first enlisted in the service, when we were spared by our 'Seniors' to mingle amongst ourselves after weeks of freshmen 'ragging'. The first day nobody talked to each other, just healing the bruise caused by excessive stone crawlings, monkey ropings and front rolls. Gump almost died when he couldn't finish the tenth lap of the army field, carrying two heavy rifles on his back. He was severely kicked on his belly by the sergeants. We nursed the poor guy, beginning day two. Some of us would put some soaked towel on his head, others would take care of his routine medicines. It took 4 days to get the old bastard up and jumping, and boy was he happy. He was so much thankful for all the care
he got, he even thanked the sergeants who punished him for bestowing such and oppertunity to mingle with the band of brothers. For next few nights, he would just call us all up and give a speech on how much he appreciated everything.
With tears on his eyes, he would say that he never got such a love from anybody else.

An orphan, he never learned the act of socializing and thus was an object of bullying from all the village kids. He never made any friend while growing up, except for the girl he liked so much. She was the only one who would even talk to him, just like in Forrest Gump. But she wouldn't accept his proposal, until recently, 2 months back. He still tells everyone, winning the love of his life was like getting everything he wanted. First the acceptance from his friend, second the hand of his heartbeat.

It had been almost a month, however, he hadn't gotten any of her letter.

Sure we would happily greet Gump, but I didn't see anybody in the camp, being so close to him. We would like to hear his stories, but I don't remember anybody sharing his story to Gump. When we would go to the secret outings, we called fly-outs, he'd be the only one sleeping in the restricted camp. Once when we were cought coming back from such an outing, everybody soaked in local booze, we were lined up in that gravel road to complete our 100 front rolls; suddenly Gump shows up and lines himself up in the group as well, ready to complete the 100 rolls he dreaded so much. He later told that he couldn't see his brothers sharing a pain amongst themselves while he is sitting in his cabin watching us. He never showed any remorse towards us, fornot taking him along for the fly-out.

Now he is kneeling down with a hand grenade clinched in his fist, pushing the pin with his thumb. As soon as he releases it, everybody in his proximity will blow up to smithers, in the middle of the jungle.

"You answer me right now Private!!! How the hell did you end up with those damn grenades in your hand!!!" Master Sergeant Crowell yelled at Gump.

Now shaking a little, Gump kept his head down and replied,
"Sir! I was cleaning this little bastard when I accidentally pulled the pin out, Sir!
I immediately pushed the pin so that it won't explode sir!"

"You morone, Good for nothing rascal! Are u aware that soon as you release your thumb, this bastard gonna explode taking everything away with it within the radius of 15 feet?"

"All I know sir, is life of mine and those near me, rest in my thumb sir!"

With all the commotion around the camp, Crowell had to take a decision fast. He couldn't risk a single life of his division but he didn't have much choice either.
""Now you listen to me carefully son! Lives of your brothers are in your hand. You will not, I repeat, will NOT, release that grenade until we clear this area and you donot see any of us around, can you do that?"

"Umm..."

"All soldiers in the count of 3, start running towards the west of the forest. Once you can no longer see this camp, all of you will duck in the safest position. 1...2..."

Everybody, including me ran for our lives. We had to, we just didn't have any choice.
The run seemed longer than I realized. Gump's life flashed in front of my eyes. Oh, how we promised we would stick to each other, Gump had taken it very seriously. He would never, ever leave us in such a distress..he was too naive. He would laugh with us in every prank we put him through. The first plant we would try to experimentally eat in this jungle, he would snatch it from us and eat it first, making sure it was edible. Would it be too much of a burden for me to go and tell him the reason why he wasn't getting the letters? I certainly think not, We owe it to this guy..I gotta go back.

I retracted immediately from the running-almost stampeding-troop. I don't think anybody realized, I was going back to Gump. Had to deliver the important message to the most innocent person I had ever met.

Gump was still there, holding the grenade in his hand. He wasn't frightened, rather seem upset. I think he was sad to see how fast all the troops ran without even saying a word of goodbye to him. He raised his head in excitement as soon as he saw me.

"Gump, I am sorry that we have to leave you in this position. But you have been a good friend and I think you deserve to know a truth before parting."

Gump looked a little surprised. I continued,
"The reason you hadn't recieved any letter from your sweetheart was because we had been hiding them. You see, the love of her life, Edwin, who had dumped her previously..came back and they are gonna marry soon. She said she was sorry and claimed she never could develop any such feelings toward you. She will always see you as her best friend, her last word."

Gump, with his mouth wide open, kept staring at me..may be in disbelief, may be in surprise.

But I had to return back to the troop, the guy might let go of the grenade any time. I did say goodbye to him for the final time and start running West, faster than earlier.

I kept running, still thinking about Gump, how we all liked him, not for his naiveness..but most probably because his dis-association with anything corrupt. He told us had nothing to live for before he met us. When he got his love too, he was the richest person alive. We loved the kid, still we didn't consider him a friend. He was never an inner-circle.

Suddenly, in the midst of my run, I heard a loud sound, BANG!!!! It wasn't of a bomb explosion for sure, followed by a whistling fade. It sure came from Gump's direction though. I saw all the soldiers getting up and going back to check on Gump..

but I had a bad feeling in my stomach. Suddenly it became clear to me, without me witnessing what had just happened.
With slow pace I walked towards our Camp, where Gump had shot himself with his .22 caliber. The kid had nothing to live for again, his friends alienated him without a hint of farewell and his love had just deserted him. The world was worthless for the kid
who played the biggest prank of his life, he had the grenade on his left hand now.. a faulty one lablelled, 'Demo.', a small gun on his right.

It wasn't night yet, but I could swear I saw a shooting star..a pure lonestar falling off the sky, red with deceits.

THE END

Oys, thanks for the review homie. One of these days, I want to write a short story in your and Deep's style. My style, it seems,is getting repititious.

Deep, I was very good in Nepali Vashik Shuddhata, but those sentences were hard even for me man. Gotta mellow it down a little comrade. Thanks for the good words and yeah, I think although the ending was different from my Previous ones, there seems to be some repiting theme on them. I will try to change the 'ayam' in new ones.

Shaq, traded to Miami and still remembers Hollywood. Thanks for the kind words brother.

Dananah, nanananah hey hey goodbye. Thanks for taking the time to go over it, it is a little lengthy. No, it ain't a true story. But 75th Infantry division's raid in France is a real one.

To those who read it thanks for going through a lengthy story.

Deep, good analysis.
This time I wanted to give away the part that the protagonist is going to die eventually(although he didn't wanted to actually die in the first place), but I also gave away the twist in the beginning sentence of the story.
Your analysis is better than the story dude. Thanks.

Hey hey Lekhak!

And what timely writing to ward off summer jetlag blues! I look forward to more stories from you.

Dananah, I brought a "English to Nepali to English" dictionary for the sole purpose of decoding Deep's and Nepe's Nepali. Wanna borrow it?! :P

Wow wow, first of all I am happy to see you back. In addition to that, the story is absolutely marvelous and thrilling as well.

Shaq brother, if I could translate Deep's message for you, wouldn't I be able to write stories like him?
Deep, you will get a good revenge for twisting our minds. I will come up with more Nepali words next time you write a story.

STAR!! back in the States, eh? Hopefully the trip was great. I am sure you will be telling a lot of stories about Nepal to the kids at your school. Thanks for passing by.

Rusty, how the heck are you!! It has been a while since we have talked about Knicks. Thanks for going through.
