Guys,

I am pretty sure some of you may have already been in this situation. My parents are coming for a short visit to US this summer. But, the problem is they don't speak/understand english. How does it work when they need help like in transits ?

Hoping for your valuable suggestions and I appreciate your answers..

Thanks,
GOOD JOB

Just an idea.........Whenever I have travelled, I have always found some nepalese who were with me througout the whole trip from Nepal to US. So, there must be some nepalese coming to US via the same route as your parents...... your parents can always ask them for their help.

YOu can suggest your parents to book the ticket for the day when someone is traveling to the same place as your parents.

Thanks for your suggestion; I understand your points guys... but since it is summer, and students mostly tend to come during spring and fall sessions, I am having a hard time finding nepalese people coming to US.

Thanks
GOOD JOB

There is people called PSA (Passanger Service Assistance) with every airlines. Some provide free and some for fee. They help passanger to go from one terminal to another or one gate to other. Yoy have to request then in advance. If passanger cannot walk a long distance they provide wheelchair also.
Another way is type the following in paper and show the airlines staff or airport staff to help.
" I do not speak english. please show me to go to next gate no_______for_______airlines. I am going to ________city in USA.
thank you for your help."

I hope it will help.

once hai i was flying back to nepal and was in transit for 18 hours long in Bangkok and what i saw was an old woman around the age of 70 she was hanging a huge laminated A4 size paper tied with a string around her neck written in a very big font, her name, flight number, departure and destination. And i was WTF man this is a shame on her chhora-buharis who came up with such dumb idea. She was looking like its a sale item displayed in stores. And i went to her and asked her to take off that thing and took her to hotel in airport to rest and the problem of her was she was hungry for such long time i bought her some food paid the hotel rent helped her till flight.

so guys check all the things above look for a suitable flight and transit time so that ur parents wont suffer while travelling.

Well done Foe_4_mysty. It was very humble of you to do that. Hope it becomes an example of all of us here who travels to and from Nepal on numerous occasions. Once again, good job and great understanding.

Great. I don't want my parents to look like sale items. So, I do agree with PSA (Passenger Service Assistance). Thanks for your inputs

Let them loose .. they will make it somehow .. they can use sign language. hehe .. just kidding.
Best way to make some flyer and have then show to ground crew for further assistance. there are thousands of ppl who pass by port and cant speak english.

just have them all paperwork handy.

Goodjob, where are your parents coming to the US? Like somebody suggested, there is similar assistance that I know, which is called "meet-and-assist" provided by airlines. You can request for that service when you buy the ticket.

My mom is also coming to the US in summer. Although she has been here a few times, she does not speak English. Let me know when and where in the US your parents are coming; maybe, if it is all possible, we can try to fix the same date.

before you book tickets for your parents, let the travel agency know that they are gonna need assistant. they will put you with other nepali flying in the same date.

Gogol, we had our mom use "meet-and-assist" service. I don't if PSA is same or different kind of service, but it was termed "meet-and-assist" when I contacted the airlines.

Your best bet regarding this service would be to call the airlines and ask them.

Folks

I am also looking for anyone traveling from Nepal to USA soon. Coz my mom wants to visit me, but this is her first time travel abroad. However, i know she can use some thute phute ko english, but i dont think thats the way she should be traveling abroad alone.

A perfect scenario would be - she could travel with someone that is flying from Nepal to Florida (as i live in Florida), or with someone to another destination inside US after which she could fly to Florida. In case of destinations outside florida, a perfect city to land would be Atlanta (as i can drive up there and pick my mom). ((( i might should picky, but its just a reflection of the fact that i like to make sure my mom enjoys her trip) and not like having food problems on the way or so so, as someone has already pointed out))>

I definitely will look at the option of those assistance facilities (someone had pointed me to that stuff last week), still the best situation would be to have her accompany to any nepalese traveling from nepal to USA.

If anyone of you guys are coming to USA soon, or know of anyone coming to USA shortly, i would be greatful if you can let me know at: slamsal@ ufl.edu

Greatly appreciate your help

Sanjay

the last option is make your parents sit in wheelchair ,that way the flight attendant would handle all the thing and they will also make arrangement such that the connecting flights are not missed.
1 months before one of my relative got his parents like that ,they were old too.

Well, things get complicated when old people try to travel, when they cant utter English.

One of my friends who work for the navy had the same problem, like GoodJob's. Since he was in the US NAVY and had an IQ of 800, he had a brilliant idea which not only brought his parents to the US but also saved the airfare for both of them.

Though the practice is safe, I don’t recommend anyone to do this.

He bought two big steel boxes and made his parents to sit inside and locked it. He was smart so he gave them some food, and a large bottle of water, and made few holes in the box too.

The DHL brought them right in the door of my friend.

That saved whole lot of confusion and they even didn’t have to go to the Embassy for the VISA. How brilliant.

Daky

Though the practice is safe, I don’t recommend anyone to do this.
