I have been suffering from a blister since long inside the lower lip. It comes and goes away frequently. It starts increasing and becomes like full of blood and then stays 1 day and goes down . Again few days later comes and goes away. I has been doing for about 2 months. I visited Dr. but they could not figure out what is going on.

Does any one has this problem and had this problem in the past. Does anyone knows about this? please help me providing suggestion.

thanks

Looks like cold sores... Herpecin does not work. Looking at over the counter products... only Abreva is FDA approved. But, a small tube of Abreva cost around 20 dollars... and it only helps to prevent the spread not the healing if you already have it.
Since you have been seeing a doc for it.. so i assume the problem is significant.. Your doctor could have tried Acyclovir 200 mg five times a day for 5 days. or Zovirax cream. Zovirax is very expensive. Zovirax is over the counter medication if you are in Europe.
Anyway, the point here is: COST...  and as long as you have insurance do not hesitate to use prescription medication...  I highly doubt OTC products will be beneficial in ur case.

One other suggestion will be: take Varicella zoster vaccine which is also known as chickenpox (varicella) vaccine. I am sure you must have taken it long time ago. A lot of times, by some reason...(may be not maintaining cold chain of the vaccine or vaccine somehow failing to generate same level of immune response), your body will not produce enough antibody. You can do antibody titer test to see if you have enough antibody or not.. but it will be expensive again.. taking one extra chickenpox vaccine is not expensive and will not hurt you either. Chickenpox is caused by varicella zoster virus which is one of the eight herpes virus. There is so much similarities between viruses that cause chickenpox and cold sore. By the way, this indication of chickenpox vaccine is not FDA approved for its use in recurrent cold sore. But, ask your doctor to use some common sense of virology and anybody here who knows physiology of viruses will agree the logic.

You can take chickenpox vaccine in one of the quick care or CVS's minute clinic or Walgreens' take care clinic or whatever they call. You do not need prescription to get that vaccine. Or you can get that in county's health department too.
Please take chickenpox vaccine and post your experience in the same thread so that it would help others to make decision..... Let me know if you get another episode of blisters after taking chickenpox vaccine.

Google about "mucocele" and see if matches your blister.

Post a picture of the blister, might be helpful.

usually mucoceles contain clear fluid because its a blockage of the minor salivary glands. But you may also be traumatizing the local area.

Do you bite your lips?

Do you have any oral piercings ?

any habits? abuses?

Do you suck your lips?

more details required...to answer your question!

Thank you all who provided me the positive response of my problem.

sarkekodimag ji,

As I said I went to health center for this problem and Dr. did culture as well whether there is any virus, or bacteria. But they did not get anything. According to you suggestion I might take that vaccine if it is available outside. I am right now in USA.

shirish ji,

I never take anything like tobacco, cigaratte, coffee, tea etc. When it came first the first time, I remembered I bit it with my teeth little bit so that the water like thing stored came out. Then it was gone. But came back after a week. These days comes back once a week or so. Yesterday, I said it seems like full of blood inside because it seems red but may be just the water like liquid stored.

I never suck my lips. Also I am not sexually active.

thanks again.

KhilaNath bro,

Why dont you take a picture of the affected area and post it here. Your description is incomplete to make decision. As i recommended earlier, take chickenpox vaccine. It might help if it is related to cold sore.

Now, lets talk about culture.
Culture is not a magic tray where you dump the smear of bodily fluid and after two days it will become yellow or red or blue or orange and tell you what bacteria or viruses are present. Culture is also specific to particular organism. Some organisms grow in acidic medium whereas some in alkaline and still there are some that will grow in neutral medium and do not ingore the fact that there are still so many that will never grow in that culture media. This is merely an example to clarify why you can always question the result of the culture and lab error. Doc should treat a patient not the number. If i go on and on here it will be 30 page long document. So, let me cut is short and give you few simple examples.

Acid fast bacteria (this group includes Mycobacterium species.. TB, Leprocy. and so many other dz): To culture this type of bacteria it will take several weeks. And sometimes 8-12 weeks and sometimes they will never grow. So, will you wait until you see the result of the culture or will treat the pt with antibiotics??? A lot of times you start therapy covering all the organisms you suspect more likely to cause it and looking at the response of the patient and lab results, you taper the therapy to treat the person by adding up or cutting down some of the meds the pt is already on. There are so many other bacteria which can not be cultured in Laboratory setting.
I am not saying doubt all the result you get it from lab. Matter of fact, its your health care provider who will do it not you. E. coli is another gram negative bacteria which will grow in culture within 12-18 hours.
Another scenario: if you have multiple bacteria infection and they culture the specimen in one media. You might see only one group of bacteria growing up in the culture media and still miss the others. Coz, the culture media might not be suitable for the growth of other bacteria. Thats why, you only see one set of bacteria and your health care provider will target that one particular bacteria. If pt gets better thats awesome.. but if pt's condition deteriorate your doc will add some other drugs to cover the microorganisms that do not grow in that particular culture and likely to cause the existing etiological condition.

Scenario 2: There are some atypical bacteria (legionella sp., chlamydia sp., mycoplasma sp. and so on) which require specialized culture media for their growth. If you dump them in any X, Y, Z media, they will not grow.

Scenario 3: Culturing virus>>> in research or theory i would do it. But for clinical purposes the significance of viral culture is very very low. Take a moment and think what virus is: It does not have any cytoplasm. It is only composed of genetic materials ( dna, rna...and whtever). Viruses use host's cytoplasm for its growth. Now, how are you going to culture virus in regular culture media?? only specialized labs have that capability to grow different sets of viruses. and it might take so many weeks too. and could be very expensive too.

Bottom Line: Culture can miss so many things. And i am sure they might not have cutlured virus. How many days did it take them to give you the results?? Culture is not limited to change in color red or orange or yellow or blue, there is a lot on it. I hope, somebody here with laboratory science background might elaborate so many things in the thread.

PS: what did your doc suspect it to be? and what kind of treament (tx) regimen you were on before? I still believe your doc is in the best position to make a decision for you not us. We are only throwing stones here and there thinking that it might hit the target. Please dont hesitate to ask questions to your doc.

Sarkekodimag is right. They're not gonna be able to tell what it is until they run all the tests. If its a virus and they did a wound culture, that is not enough. I dunno how much it costs to go to ER but they will have all the supplies needed to run the tests. For Herpes Simplex and Varicella Zoster, usually, it takes about 5 days
to get the results.I hope you have health insurance coz its not gonna be cheap.

most of the times, it is due to a lack of specifc protein called lycene. This protein is not usually obtained from the body, instead is produced by the body itself. So weather or stress cause the body to be weak and thus this protein does not get a chance to be formed.

What you can do is get the 'Lycene' protein on small tube as well as capsules. You can usually order online and is delivered from 1-2 days. Google it for the online purchase website. the small tube helps you get rid of it temporarily but effectively. the capsule one a day makes sure the body has enough so that the blister does not show up again. Any question, let me know.

The best part of it is that it does not have any side effect. So take my word and give a shot. And when it works, stop by and let us know.

Cheers,

meri_uni

KN broda,

thank you for the pic... tara bro le aadhi kaam matrai garyau.. you did not mention what other tx regimen you had tried before.

By the way.. tyo cold sore or fever blister hoina... that looks like canker sore.

Uni le vaneko thikai ho.. lysine is over the counter product .. that you can find in any pharmacy... that is used for cold sore..

Broda, how often you do change your tooth brush?? and what kind of tooth paste are you using??? maybe it has SLS ( sodium lauryl sulfate). SLS gives foam when you brush the teeth. Squigle is a tooth paste with least amount of dermal irritants and does not contain SLS. Or ask the druggist in the pharmacy to hand you a tooth paste without SLS.

For canker sore: use over the counter canker medication.. use the one with benzocaine that will decrease the pain. Benzocaine is local anesthetic agent and will numb the area... decrease the pain.

Bottom line: Change your tooth brush and tooth paste. If possible use the toothpaste without SLS. You can add on once a day centrum (multi-vitamin). By the way canker sore is not contagious so you can are ok to kiss... hehehehe... Aba pani complication vayo vane.. see a dentist. Get well soon broda.

Khilanath,

I think i had exactly the same type of blister some 12 years ago. It came and went for a month or two. When i visited my school's dr. , i beleive he said something similar to what Shirish is saying , "its a blockage of the minor salivary glands" and that it didn't have any cure. However, each time it grew in size, i let the doctor puncture the blister ( yes the blood will come but it won't hurt) and eventually it stopped coming up. Hope it helps.

yeah sorry my bad.....i meant lysine. So when you get the lysine ointment in a small tube, make sure you carry wherever you go and use it as often as needed, Dont let your lips to get dry. As i said before, there is no hamr at all for using more often.

And also for the capsules, I remember when my friend ( who is a health practioner here ) told me to be sure that it contains amino acid as they together form a layer in those canker or blisters and come in effect. Hopefully, you will not mind giving a shot for the lysine soon and feel better dude.

Cheers again,

Meri_Uni.

By the looks, it is a "mucocele" -  a blockage of the minor salivary glands.

You may or may not be traumatizing the area by sucking or brushing or eating, and for some reason the orifice of the minor salivary gland got blocked and the salivary production got accumulated instead of drainage. There are more than 600 minor salivary glands in the oral cavity and the ones inside the lips are most frequently affected.

There is no treatment and usually it gets ruptured and when the fluid drains, you may get a salty taste in your mouth. To prevent secondary infections, you have to keep your mouth clean.

If it gets recurrent and bothers you, removal (surgical) of the minor glands may be an option, but I do NOT think you will need it. It usually gets resolved by itself. If it gets too big, you may puncture or it gets ruptured itself.

Saliva itself has lysine so application of extra lysine may not be beneficial. Don't bother applying lysine.
SLS, detergent in toothpastes, may cause ulceration and what you have is a blister so you do not have to worry about SLS causing it.

So don't worry and keep us posted. Hope this helps.

Guys
I am having the same problem right now. It really hurts and It made me sick. It comes to me several times year. Visited the doctors, they just recommend to use some jell medication, forgot the name. It happened several times and I am tired to doing medication. Here is my experiences

It lasted sometimes more than a week.
During this period don't drink orange juice or some acidic products.
Take some capsule of Vitamin B complex every day
Clean up using baking soda.
Drink alot of water don't keep in dry for long time

I think, this is dude the lack of some vitamin in your body. I think it is Vitamin B complex or something and Stress will definitely help and if you have any problem as gastric, this maybe the reason

My current blisters called mouth sore lasted for more than 5 days.
