People regularly argue over the birthplace of Buddha - India or Nepal etc and different groups claim different things but this video is a short aim to spread the truth, spread that 'Buddha was born in Nepal, not in India' on the 17th April 2010. This is not to create rifts between different people. Back when Buddha was born Lumbini may not have been a part of India or Nepal but today it is in Nepal therefore we have the rights to say the birthplace of Buddha is in Nepal.
I hope you all help me in spreading the correct information. Please put that as your status on facebook, twitter on the 17th. Thank you and please watch the video.

thanks lex for your initiative to promote Nepal and "jewel of Asia"
this is what i found our while taking Contemporary to Religion class this semester.

563 BCE: Prince Siddhartha Gautama (Lord Buddha) was born in Lumbini, south Nepal. He was born into King Suddhodana Gautama and his queen Mayadevi, rulers of the Shakya tribe of Kapilavastu region near Lumbini. He came to Kathmandu valley with his several disciples during the rule of the 7th Kirati ruler, King Jitedasti.

The fact was that the life of Buddha was not a myth but reality comes from one of the inscriptions in the pillar erected by King Asoka in 239 BCE. The inscriptions read Here was the Enlightened One born. During the rule of the 14th Kirat King Sthunko, the Indian Emperor Ashoka also came to the Kathmandu Valley with his daughter, princess
Charumati. During his stay in the valley, he had four stupas built in four directions and one in the centre of Patan. The stupa still stand in the Patan outside Lagankhel market. Today the UNESCO has declared Kapilavastu, and Lumbini, as a World Heritage site.

jai Nepal.

crazyhorse,

thanks for the detailed info. just a small question but when Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini, had they divided the land between India and Nepal at that time?

Mr. Lex, It is to be noted that ancient India were composed of many tribes. Buddha was  approximately born in 563 BCE according to scholars and historians. So at this time, there were many tribes and small kingdoms. Early Vedic texts attest several Janas( tribes) living in semi-nomadic tribal state, fighting among themselves for cows, sheep and green pastures. This was literally a period of Maha Janapadas(700–300 BCE).
The term "Janapada" literally means the foothold of a tribe.

During the Mauryan Empire period which existed approximately from 321–184 BC, many of the tribes were rounded up during  the expansion to bring them under Mauryan control. King Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent from 269 BC to 232 BC. One of India's greatest emperors, Ashoka reigned over most of present-day India after a number of military conquests. His empire stretched from present-day Pakistan, Afghanistan in the west, to the present-day Bangladesh and the Indian state of Assam in the east, and as far south as northern Kerala and Andhra. But the Himalayas region including Lumbini were beyond the reach of Asoka. At this stage, King Suddhodana Gautama of the Shakya tribe was ruling the Kapilavastu region near Lumbini while the Kathmandu valley was the Kirat kingdom. Kiratdesa referring to Nepal and the surrounding Himalayas region is listed as as one of the many ancient kingdoms in the vedic and other puranic works.

Hope this help.

Are we so hooked on this thing because this is one of the ONLY two things that we can be proud of as Nepalis? Everyone knows what the other one is.

newlynew - we can be proud of many things, come to the west and we'r more likely to appreciate our culture more since unlike the west, Nepal still has strong family togetherness, our community, our society is strong - we're very people oriented whereas in west its all about individuals rights and actions.

Everest and Buddha is Nepal's claim to fame and obviously it represents us and when some other nation is tryna join the bandwagon and claim it as theirs it obviously hurts Nepali sentiments.

Most Nepalese as a nation can be proud of only things they are born with because they have very little or none to have achieved to be proud about.

The prime examples to boast about, of course, are Mount Everest and Gautam Buddha.

Mount Everest was created by shifting tectonic plates which is just a natural phenomenon. An Indian ruler built the Taj Mahal, that still to this day, bedazzles architecture connoisseurs from the world over. Can we Nepalese offer a man-made counterpart that can remotely  rival the Taj? Absolutely none of course. This name "Everest" itself is not even a Nepalese word. See, we can't even popularize our own version of the name for our very own mountain.

Speaking of Gautam Buddha, he happened to be born in present day Nepal. Again this is just another matter of chance. His mom Mayawati could have delivered the baby on the Indian side, a couple of hours too early or a couple of hours too late while criss-crossing along the current border as a needle sewing two pieces of cloths would look.
The fact might change soon, though I am not excited about it. And it could be "Buddha was born in India". Nepal has been a Hindu-dominated society for centuries and the elites had channeled all the resources to Pashupati Bikaas Kosh and none to Lumbini for their own status-quo maintaining agenda. Now with fake Kapilvastu rising up and sh!t, the day of awakening has finally dawned upon the Nepalese. The subject of "Where was Buddha born?" is like a story of a neglected wife who has met a new man then the soon-to-be ex-husband has re-discovered why he wants to continue being with her.

Some other things most Nepalese can be proud of are :
  • I am from a Royal, Brahman or Kshatriya (and not a Vaishya or Shudra) blood for my dad happened to have an erection while my mom was ovulating.
  • I am the [unemployed] son/daughter of a millionaire father who started working when he was in his pre-teen years to help support his younger silblings.
  • I am the son/daughter of a Minister who came to Kathmandu with only a pair of Daura Suruwal and who now owns several prime real estate locations throughout the Capital. Therefore, I never felt the need to work. Do you know that even Warren Buffet's (the Oracle of Omaha) niece works in a regular job to contribute to human civilization.

Finally, Buddha himself would be disappointed to find people fighting amongst themselves regarding his birth-place instead of practicing what he tried to teach us.

*April 17 it is then!

*Budhha was born in Nepal, not in India* and off it goes from my facebook to all my friends.

keep it real.

soulless

Mr. Hyde: I think you hit it where it matters. my exact views too. however, proving Buddha was born in Nepal and making people aware of it will help me introduce myself to all these ignorant fair-skinned ppl a little easier. It will also help Nepal get some tourism from the recently-created awareness, hopefully. although, I still doubt if there are more articles stating Nepal as buddhas birthplace, but while people look up Nepal in google, they will stumble across the real beauty of Nepal, most of 'em still far behind of today. And as Tamang said it in one of his post, Visit Nepal 2011!

Nonetheless, YOU should make your country proud, not wait or look for opportunities for the other way round.

soulless

ps: any specific reasons for picking April 17th?

i came up with this idea after i saw hoardes of people joining such groups on FACEBOOK yet I felt we could do something together, APRIL 17 because SIDDHARTHA GAUTAMA has 17 letters. I didnt know about the PBC documentary when I made the video but it coincides well, we've got more to spread now - also check out one such group on FACEBOOK, it claims that even Dalai Lama has wrote that Buddha was born in India.

will this saga ever end.
even if it doesnt, lets spread the correct information as we know it.
which is

'Buddha was born in Nepal, not in India' do it now or later but please do it

17.04.10
