Some interesting posts i found

Nepali    4/3/2010 11:52:32 PM EST
We are all aware that Rato Bangala is doing the most dishonest academic plagiarism by a) issuing fake transcripts (meaning they "correct" grades of students) and inflate grades b) RBS students can buy essays fro certain price c) they write their own recco letters.

And it has paid off. Look at their college acceptance and look at ours. Its insane and wrong.

The Dixit family is running this scam for so long. We need to destroy it. Let us write an appeal letter to ALL the TOP schools in US asking them to 'blacklist' RBS.

What do you guys think?

ramshyam   4/4/2010 5:40:03 PM EST

I have heard this for many years now, and I think you have to be very careful about how you go about doing this. From what I have heard, RBS never actually releases the mid-term grades to the students themselves but sends it directly to the colleges; the students apparently never get to see their transcript that is sent on their behalf. I have also heard that the counselors there meticulously create a college list so that different students do not "clash" in their applications, meaning that it is unlikely for colleges to figure out the discrepancies. If this is true, and I have been told this by many people including "good" RBS students, what confuses me is whether these students actually do well in their final exams and perform as expected in the States. I have no idea about this.

I think this might be something that SEBS elders should look into. Even if it is true, if a bunch of recent BNKS students make these accusations against arguably out biggest rivals, it might have consequences for them.

frustrated budhanilkantha students are complaining. though it does seems the school went downhill because of the corrupt principal (sharma) and introduction of girls / co-ed

NP Sharma did have a lot to do with it but the downhill is  not due to girls/co-ed.

Look at these bunch of psychopath-gays from BNKS complaining!! Doesn't make any sense. Whats bothering you ppl if someone is trying by all means to get into the US. You jealous ppl!! You all think we don't know the inside story from BNKS. Yes u guys are smart ppl, but let the less smarter live there life as well. They are not going to take away your spots @ Brown or Cornell. If you guys are so much worried about nepal and nepalese then why don't you all  ex-BNKS return back and re-build our country nepal, instead of whining here in sajha. It would be the greatest favor if you all smart ppl could do that for us. But the irony is everyone from BNKS is way too much smart that they can't live a life in Nepal!!!

nepali nepali your arguemnet is seriously flawed. I am seriously against people "using all means to get into US." I thnk only deserving people should get the rewards. I hate when people start abusing systems. and BTW i am not from BNKS or RBS...just an outside observer.

back in those days, only BNKS students knew steps and process to get admitted to top schools in US but it's not same anymore. i don't know if RBS is cooking something or not but now everybody knows the process and everybody is jumping into it.

Why only Rato Bangala and BNKS, why oh why? cuz they take heafty donations to get their students admitted? rato bangala is nothing but just a rip off for poor Nepali standard.schools like these are the reasons why people do corruption and smuggling in Nepal. why not teach someone from other colleges...

When I was in nepal, i had limited knowledge of admission process. thus i ended up in average school here in the US.  I was happy with my admission to the US college even though i have to pay tuition out of my own pockets.

but for students of BKNS, the process starts right after they are done with SLC. their target is to get into top US school with full scholarship and no less. they know what are the things that is required to get an admission. they have a connections with x BNKS students who already landed an admission and they get good advice from them.  it's like a fraternity. and they bust their balls working on those stuff.
couple of my friends from BNKS started working on SAT when they were in 11th. they worked on their recommendations and their extra curriculum because they knew those are the critical part of the admission. meanwhile, i had no clue about these stuff until i graduated from +2. they gave SAT 2-3 times and waited a year just to get a good score, while i was content with average score and just wanted to get out of Nepal.

you see the process now.

now going to completely topic,

RBS is jumping into this bandwagon and so are other elite schools becoz it brings lots of money to the school.elite schools don't care about who tops the board anymore. they care about how many students they can send to US on a scholarships because it can bring more admission to their school. now a days, rich parents only care about sending their kids to US for further studies and if some school have higher rates of students getting scholarship in top US school, rich parents have more tendency to admit their kid to that school at any cost.

most RBS students are from wealthy families in Nepal and most of them are abroad only becasue of their ability to afford, parents' connections with buerocrats and other affluent people in Nepal and abroad.

i have high regards for BKNS students who are genuine "talented" students but RBS kids would not be here if they had to do ont heir own......my 2 cents

aabakgarne: can you please elaborate your comments. in what way are you or your friend involve with university or their student picking process, if you don't mind.

I don' t know how demanding or needy Nepalese students are but one is for sure, they look for scholarships at any cost because they cannot fund themselves out of their own pocket to go to top school.

Buddhanilakantha school has had an advantage over 99% of schools in Kathmandu and rest of Nepal for DECADES. Other schools are jumping on the bandwagon. Let me make a point early on : I got hatred for neither of these schools nor do I speak for either of them.

Personal interactions with several Buddha.. students tells me that whatever the case may be, I highly doubt that they resorted to cheating in order to land those schools. They just knew what counted and worked on making their applications more robust than most applicants in Nepal an even overseas.

I think its about time this strategy leaked and was picked up by other schools in Nepal. This thread is interesting because this is the first time I hear anybody vocally bring up this issue. What seems to me is that this strategy of BNKS for the longest time was almost exclusive ot the club, apparently other schools are catching up quick and maybe the starter of the thread feels threatened by this.

In any case, cheating should not be promoted and if RBS is doing so then they don't deserve any respect. However, proof of any such act would be necessary.

I am no BNKS or RBS grad, but this thread interests me because of the fact that, like dolphin posted above, information (in Nepal) about how to get to an American University was a mystery when I was a 12th grader in Nepal, internet was rare and the only reliable information(limited and rarely current) was in the American Library, in the form of gynormous books and seminars which made it difficult for the average joe to find much. Let alone know in details about applying early vs. regular apps, full financial aid, extra c. activities, putting up a decent resume or knowing how to get the application fee waived.

Let there be competition and may the best car..err. person win!

Yes, its true that parents of Rato Bangala students use their power, money and source/force to get their kids admission..but some spots are specifically reserved in BNKS for students of rich parents. the only college which you cant use source and force is St Xaviers as the management is non-nepali Jesuit priests unless you agree to have them sexually molest you.

when i was growing up st. xaviers also only admitted students from parents who were influential to Nepali society. They would openly ask what parents did and only admit their children if the parents were well off or were in high governmental jobs. BNKS students told me that they use to take SAT for other studetns and few years ago they got busted in harvard. anyone knows about that?here is why it's not helping Nepal.

a) This system creates cheating b) This promotes Nepali parents to corrupt and cheat in the society so they too can offord these rich schools c) They are lying to the generous donators/schools. d) they will never return to improve the situation of Nepal d) all waste and promotes cheating...

i would rather hope that these rich schools leave us alone rather than not monotoring the system allowing cheating to prosper.

Here are a few observations I have made so far.

1. In the USA, if a man is from a village, he thinks of helping his village. Most of them ritually send some money to their school back home, set up some scholarship and do something nice. (Some asks for donation to do that, but that is another story). I have heard very few men from Kathmandu who talked about helping their school or neighborhood. Some of them even avoid Nepali gathering. (I believe Pukar Malla of St Xavier is an exception:) He is definitely a patriotic good man!)

2. BNKS and St Xaviers had monopoly over top schools and scholarship. Interestingly, even when people from outside districts who went to BNKS came to the USA, they have rarely shown the zeal to improve their districts. All that expenditure on them by the govt hasn't borne any fruition so far. I even read of a scam about donation to a library by BNKS students in a remote district which never materialized. In fact, their zeal to work for collective welfare is so pathetic that they were occasionally unable to pay for their own office expenditure back in KTM...(Correct me if I am wrong)

3. Meanwhile, if one is to admit the hypothesis that intelligence is uniformly distributed among population, then a large fraction of Nepali outside these elite schools are working quietly in their own field and excelling. One wonders where are those excellent product of BNKS[who are not in USA] on whom the state spent so much? Why dont' we see them leading Nepali people in politics, industry and so on?[I am sure those with heirloom have established some leadership position in industry, but how many have excelled on their own?]

I once met a student from BNKS who wanted to go to Nepal and run in election, but he was speaking with slightly affected English peppered all over his Nepali conversation. I was wondering whether the guy knows that Nepali people want you to be able to speak in folksy tone to vote for you. It is your ability to speak in THET Nepali--ukhan tukka laden Nepali-- that counts in Nepal. Excel in your field, but retain your identity.

4. Back to RBS and BNKS, this year BNKS school have no good placement in undergraduate program, and it is probably a big disappointment for all of them. RBS has one good aspect that I really admire: Dixits tell all their students that they must come back to Nepal. They are trying to create a good manpower for the country. Dixits themselves have gone back after getting a good education from a top school in the states. If they are taking money from other riches, I have no jealousy regarding this. It is a free market, people pay what they can and what they are willing to. Dixits also have a responsibility to build a world class product from their school, after taking a good amount of money, and they have done that.

5. I doubt the veracity of these allegations against RBS, it looks more like an allegation coming from disgruntled BNKS students. Given BNKS itself had a history of padding the resume of their students, and their students engaging in proxy SAT test taking, one is inclined to dismiss such allegation immediately. Personally, I think RBS may be involved in such practice, but it may be in 'acceptable' level;i.e. same as feeder schools in Boston and Cupertino might do to their school. Look, at the end of the day, getting into Harvard is an international competition.

This post is simply outrageous and delusional. RBS is most definitely a great school. And students get accepted into top universities not because they have these so called 'connections', but because they are smart and intelligent. RBS focuses not only on academics like most of the schools in Nepal does, but on various other aspects. Model United Nations is a very good example how RBS differs itself from other schools. RBS is the only school in Nepal that holds MUN every year. Not only that, RBS students attend Indian Model United Nations, Harvard United Nations. By involving students into such activities, RBS makes its students more outgoing and globally informed. This is just one of the many examples how RBS provides better opportunities than any other school in Nepal.

I am an ex-RBS student. I studied in RBS for 6 years. I left RBS in A1 (Grade 11). Currently, I am studying in one of the prestigious United World Colleges in Hong Kong. To be honest, if it weren't for RBS I would never have got this opportunity. This year 3 RBS students got accepted to United World Colleges around the world, one in USA, one in India, while I got accepted in Hong Kong. RBS built a platform for students like us to exploit our full potential, to bring us out of our comfort zones and challenge ourselves.

It is outrageous that people think only people with money can join RBS. This year, the students that got accepted in RBS for A-levels are a very talented group and have the opportunity to study in RBS sole on merit-basis. Almost all the students that got accepted to RBS have distinction on their SLC results. Also, many of them are from families that are not financially stable. RBS provides scholarships to those who need it, and those who earn it. Many of my friends had scholarship.

Another blasphemous thing I noticed in this discussion board is the fact people think RBS has a propaganda that provides false information to universities in USA so that their students get accepted. They get accepted because they deserve it. SAT scores are a prime example. Not only that, if you look at a college essay of a RBS student and a student from any other school, (trust me I have looked over several examples to drop into this conclusion) you can see the difference in class between the two. Another important thing is, people are jealous because RBS teachers know about the CommonApp and the application process in the USA very well compared to the teachers in the other schools. That is not the fault of the school.

I noted how 'rid' said BKNS students are genuinely talented, let me remind you, when you say 'talented' it refers to the overall standard of the student, not just the academics. You may argue that BKMS students have better grades, but grades are not the sole factor that decide your college placement. This is something RBS managed to understand. It is not cheating if other schools failed to get this important detail.
