Just wondering if there are any active investors who are playing the stock market among us here in sajha. I am a rookie investor myself, so it would be nice to share a few thoughts, ideas, and tips with those involved in it.

From what I have seen in America, owning your own business or being an wise investor is the only way to build wealth. Well you can always hit the jackpot lottery but what are the odds? Investment, Stock Market, and all the financial jargons related to them can be overwhelming and intimidating for first time investors, even more so if you are an immigrant. So, I hope we can make this a knowledge sharing platform to help those who are interested in learning more about investment and stock market in general. And for those of you who have no interest in stocks or investment at all, here is why may be you should reconsider.

We all know about Dell computer and chances are at one point or another we have all used it. If you had spent $5,000 on Dell stocks in 1998 your return as of today would be over $133,000. Or how about ebay? I know I use it for buying and selling time to time. If you had spent $5,000 on ebay in 2003, guess how much would be the value of your stock today? In less than 3 years your $5,000 investment today would be worth over $47,000 today.

Now I am not saying it's a sure thing because you can lose money in the stock market as well and that is why you need to be wise and do your research. So, if we have interested folks, we can make this a way to help each other in a small way.

Thanks.

i consider following:
1. DOGS of DOW (O:
you buy when the market is in reverse sentiment.
@ this moment
T [ AT& T]
VZ [ VERIZON ]
MO [ Philip Morris and Kraft food i believe]
GM [ General Motors]
MRK [ merck]
C [ citi group ]
fall in my investing group.
I put certain amount of money in them and forget about them for a whole year. Next year same time i will come up with another 6. and sell all of these provided they are not in my list again.
How do I choose them?
1. they have to be one of the 30 DOW components.
2. they are the DOGS of DOWS i.e. Dividend yeild is highest among the components.

so far i have had 9% APY return [ ON AVERAGE] just by dividend income apart from CAPITAL APPRECIATION. I have been doing this for last 4 years (O: works for me ....

RISK is like in the case of GM. might go through bankruptcy.. do you have stomach to lose money? if not handsome return (O:.. i lost some money on EK when it was dropped from DOW.. so shit happens but .. thats what stock market is all about hoina ta.....

DISCLAIMER: performance of the past does not gurantee future RETURNS. and this is in no way to be considered as a financial advice. Please, consult your financial advisor.
===================================================
as always,

what do i know (O:

Hey u_day bro, I also find FDG interesting, even more so after the coal mine incident in the US earlier this month. There is still great needs for coal around the world and I think US coal mining policy is only going to tighten, so that should benefit FDG since it is based in Canada. I've just been watching on this one for a few weeks now...so lets see.

Thanks for letting me know about smartmoney site, and it is pretty interesting to read the insider trading info.

Pfizer's price sounds really tempting, but how come it has been on a downfall for the past whole year? Did they have some kinds ongoing litigation?? I had invested on a similar company Merck (MRK) 3 months ago, they have had law suite for one of their pills Vioxx earlier in the year and their price was on a constant fall. 3 months ago I purchased it for around $26 per share and right now it is up to $33. So, what I'm trying to say is I love these pharmaceutical stocks. Americans aren't living any healthier lifestyle and baby boomers are big spenders on medicare.

If I learn enough about Pfizer's trouble, I can weigh my in risk involved and think about buying because the price is really good. Let me know if you know anything else about this stock. Thanks in advance :-)

Hey thapap, nice to see Merck fall in both of our selection. You must have been posting your message as I was replying to u_day.

And for other like minded investors, you should be watching out for China Meidan Tech (CMED). In 6 months it's share has gone from $15 to $40 and still growing. I haven't bought any yet but I like what I'm seeing.

As a Canadian, I love oil. I live breather, drink, speak oil. I even smell of oil. Roughneck that I am, cuz we're soon abt to whoop Saudi Arabia's ass in terms yearly output. Check out this stock that I started following once volume picked up and PE became reasonable:

UTS energy, since the time I started following it, it's gone up 6 folds!!!!!!! YEAH BABY!!!!!! YEEE HAW!!!!!!

I don't follow the DOW as often. I like to analyze the balance sheet and technical aspects, after all if we're to delve into uncertainties, (fundamental and technical both), why not get the best of both worlds????

timetraveller,
energy stocks i.e. OIL are good as well. XOM [ exxon mobil] is one of the dow component and has been bullish ever since... but i stay away from these huge multinationals who can play balance sheets based on multiple location and shipments scenarios. (O: i.e. trading with shell accounts..
i am lazy i mean real lazy so i pick from DOW. let other do the dog work and me reap the rewards what say u (O:.

hukka,
as far as Chinese Median is considered.. its like investing in WIPRO. (O:
and prolly like OPWV in dot com era when it boomed to 400/share and busted back to penny..

as always

There are plenty of sources on the web spitting out investment advice of every sort...

Rather than gambling with your $$ perhaps one of you can pick a company and do some deep analysis with comprables, and back up your recommendation with some numbers.

Just picking a stock and hoping it goes up and vice versa will never make you rich nor will other cliches- insider trading gossip, stale news (when u hear it in CNBC or WSJ), etc ...

Nice suggestion, Javabeans! That's what we have been trying to do in here instead of just gossiping about "hot" stocks.

Hey JavaBeans, perhaps you should go through all the postings in this thread when you have some time. We have everything from our analysis on a company to expert's published reports on different stock picks. There are plenty of sources on the web spitting out investment advice but most good ones charge you certain fee.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi AC/DC, glad to hear you are interested in investing. How familiar are you with the stock market? If you know the basic ins and outs, we can probably start talking stocks right away and narrow down our discussion to an industry you are interested in investing. Thanks to numerous online brokerage that are available, buying selling shares aren't as big of a deal these days as they used to be in the past, so no need to worry too much about that.

So, I would say if you have some money and ready to invest, let's start looking at what are your goals (long term or short term) and try to find stock / stocks to fit your criteria. I consider myself a long term investor, meaning I will not buy a stock that I am not ready to keep for at least 5 years.

Hukka Nepali, Thanks for your response. I'm also looking into long term investment. I just need some suggesstions on which stocks to buy based on your experiences, also the site you use and what are the basic fees and tax structure. More would like to hear about the site you use and how it operates.

hey AC / DC, I use scottrade.com for my stocks tranaction. They charge you $7 fee for buying or selling stocks regardless of volume. The site is very user friendly and I haven't had any problem with it. For tax purpose, you can claim up to $3,000 per year in lose and on your return, if you have kept the stock for over a year you pay 15% tax on your return but if you sell it in less than a year then you will pay 30% tax on your return. That is why it is a good idea to be in for the long run...well unless your stock price goes up 500% overnight than you should sell it even if you have had the stock for 1 minute.

Now on recommending on what stocks to buy....sure I can give you a few that I hold myself or been thinking about buying but you have to do your homework too. See who runs the company, because the leadership is very important and who are their customer as well as who are their supplier (if they have any). Say if you are a 2AA battery company, your business is totally dependent on products other companies make that uses your battery and I would like to be out of that kind of business. So, most of my stocks are metals, pharmaceuticals, and a few technology stocks.

When you have time, try to go through this thread as bunch of folks have recommended their stocks and why....I have made a few picks myself. Also, download this expert's recommendation I subscribe from Motley Fool for 2006 stock picks: http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=7629400

And then may be we can start talking about some stocks.

good luck

Hey folks, keep an eye of Avanex Crop. These guys been making some serious noise lately. Stock reaching 52 weeks high everyday. I've done some homework and the management team looks strong and judging from the past, it sure looks like it has potentials.
