I am in mid 30s working as an IT professional. Currently I have 58k in 401k and 20k in stocks. We purchased a house on 15 year mortgage with 1 year paid off. I also have accumulated enough points to get social security payments—if that is still around when its time. My plan is to return to Nepal when I feel its right time. Just wondering how much average savings of other Nepalese living abroad. At what point do I say I have had enough of this hardship life in US and I have enough savings for me to return Nepal.

If you already have a house in Kathmandu and wish to go back to Nepal, then $100,000 is all you need. That would be enough to ensure you aren't uncomfortable in your initial 5-6 months in Nepal (i.e. if you don't manage to find a job). However, that is very unlikely because IT skills are very much in demand right now in Nepal and your US experience would make you an excellent candidate for IT jobs in Nepal. Which means, the $100,000 you take with you can become a nice real estate investment (buy some land).

Totally depends, what kind of life/career you plan to have when you go back?
- If you already own a house in KTM and you are in ZERO Debt, also given you plan to start a decent job after couple of months then $100k minimum in savings.
- Assuming you don't own a house so you plan to have one and buy a car too then I would say $250K minimum. Real Estate is very expensive in KTM. Again, given you will start some decent job soon to cover continuous living expenses.
- If you want to retire early, having a 3-4 storey house in KTM could be a good source of passive income, as you could rent them out easily since they are always in demand. It will be enough to cover your living expenses given you have good savings for emergency. We (spouse & I) also have invested in 4 storey house in KTM which are all rented out and we make 60-70 k NRS monthly as a passive income.
- If you want to start up your private business / be an entrepreneur, then minimum $300k too be realistic for small to mid-size business plan
I often discuss about business stuff with family and relatives back home, who are mostly private business owner and based on their realistic business ventures ranging from small to mid-size businesses, I came up with my own calculation for all these figures. At the end, it all comes down what kind of plan you behold once you go back. Good luck dude!

Real estate prices and in general expenses are through the roof in nepal. @Riverflows I feel you. I felt the same back in Nepal, with Nepalese salary and wages I was amazed by how 9 to 5 normal Nepali workers were able to party every weekend paying 5 to 9 US$ just for a bottle of beer, drive 50 lakhs to crores vehicles for work and home. Youngsters and teenagers riding Ducatis and MV Augustas with loud eargasmic exhausts in the gallis and streets. Personally witnessed like a a dozen of Ducatis parked in Genesis Cafe and all belonged to Kathmandu University kids. The rich and poor gap in Nepal is so freaking huge, even someone with a 200k IT job in US would feel poor back in Nepal these days. Maybe it’s the savings that is ridiculously tough in US. Bravo! to Bhikari.
In short- Citizens richer than the Country (Desh Vanda Janta Dhani).

Many folks ask this same question every now and then and no one every goes back to Nepal.
If you talk to your friends they'll say they'll return in 5-10 years, ask them again in 10 years they'll repeat the same answer !

You should not plan on going back to Nepal and hope to live American life. The infrastructure won't allow you to do that anyway. In 5 years your 3 carores will worth like 3 carores due to Iinflation if you don't let the intrest sit in your account with the principle.if yiu show up too much you will her target for harresment for donations and even kidnapping.only high ranking officers and leaders of Ford to do that cuz they have the power.you will most probably die due to cancer because food has too much aduleration.in 18 yrs or so you kid will die to come to US anyway and till then they will taunt you for leaving it in the first place.

Or Maybe if you could buy this, you could live the life you wish back in Nepal just by collecting monthly rentals and relaxing on your couch. It’s only US$ 5 million 310 thousand 674 thousand and 40 cents.
