Setbacks and SurprisesIt seems that this 48-team jamboree has made football fans go crazy with lots of surprises and setbacks for their favorite football teams in this World Cup. FIFA will probably make more money in this edition than all the combined ones over the past almost hundred years.
American stadiums, built for American football games (yes, the one wearing pads, helmets and, mics and headphones and what not) hold on average 80,000+ folks and some even 100,000 and up. FIFA will use that free bucks to fund the lavish lifestyles for its officials and some pocket change for football associations around the world.
Well, our ANFA folks will not be getting any dough at the moment, and we are suspended from participating in any international matches sanctioned by FIFA because our own corrupt folks heading our football association want to get away with looting the funds, and FIFA wants them to stay on and ruin it for all of us.
Yes, it is not good for the government to interfere in independent sports associations. But when the ones running the show are all mundrey gundas and corrupt, then either FIFA must ban all current office holders of ANFA for life and let us start afresh, or keep on suspending us because the jokers at ANFA haven't held any national leagues for years and they still want more funds for their pockets while players get a token amount not even enough to have a proper diet!
Well, we are not here to talk about ANFA today or our national sports... which is 'politics' instead of football. We are not here to talk politics either. Let us talk about the games in the knockout stages.
Japan did its best to park all of its players in their own end zone in the first half, and after a surprise thrust ahead and a clean view, they managed to score a beautiful goal, but then all of a sudden, the Japanese forgot the tactics that got them to the knockout stage.
They started playing mostly like our players, taking too much time with the ball and trying to go at it by themselves instead of looking around for open spaces and finding their players for another goal. And after the half-time break, they decided not to park the bus but run around and create more chances for Vini Jr and the boys from Brazil instead, and in the end, they paid the price and had to go home with the second goal from Brazil in the closing seconds of the match.
Paraguay shocked us all with their first-half goal as well, and the Germans were unlucky as well and had to go into the penalty shoot and lose. Morocco knocked out the Dutch with their late equalizer and then won the penalty shootout.
The Germans and the Dutch go home early. Argentina has the easiest route on the way to the finals. I am expecting Argentina to face England or someone else in the semis and then most likely France again in the finals.
Let us hope Messi and his boys do win the World Cup again, and then he will be remembered for another century like our fathers remembered Pele, and we Gen X and Y remembered Maradona, and Gen Zs and the Alpha and the Beta will be talking about Messi when they are grandparents as well.
Let us expect more shock defeats for so-called big teams! Hopefully, one day, we too can be in the World Cup if FIFA decides to introduce a new 190+ country group matches and the World Cup and go on for like a year or two, and FIFA can make trillions of dollars while football associations around the world may get an extra bag of peanuts!
