Does any body have experience with laptops? I am planning to replace mine with light and powerful laptop with DVD burner. My inclination is towards Toshiba Satellite M45. But problem with this one is poor battery performacne. My budget will allow me to spend around US$1500.

Any suggestions will be valuable.

Invest bit more for a good one. Because cheap laptop fails dearly. Sony Vaio, IBM thinkpad t42 are powerful.

If you consider price: dell is good otherwise, personally, I would ignore all other brands and get IBM Thinkpad. It's solid, proven, powerful and great piece of hardware to own.

Buy ASUS...ASN5..very light..If you are really going to get a laptop..get something thats light..Toshiba's most models are pretty heavy...and what abt Apple computers? they seem to have popularity going on due to success of ipod.

I'd go with brandnames.

Also take the M processors (intel or celeron). They consume less battery, make less noise and are best for laptops. Dell, Toshiba, Compaq are good for the price. Gateway and Sony are little pricy.

I have got Dell Inspiron 9300 for $1777. Major components are - 17" SVGA screen, 60 GB 7200 RPM HDD, 512 MB RAM, 1.73 GHZ Processor, DVD Burner, Bluetooth, 128 MB Graphic Card, 3 yrs at home warranty plus some extra features. Average battery life 4.5 hrs with optimal performance. It's little heavy though - 9 lbs approx. But is a good desktop replacement for my work with high graphics and GIS applications.

Thank you all for nice suggestions,

Its really hard to pick one suitable for me from jungle of laptops. I am still shoping around for basically light laptops with large battery time, because of my travel needs.

Thank you all again, I will post if I finally decide the brand.

If your budget is $1500 then you might wanna buy Toshiba satellite A75-S231. It has everything you want in a laptop. P4 processor, 548 HT tech,3.33 GHZ, 512 MB/100GB/DVD super multi drive and more. I just got this one today after my compaq notebook burnt out on me, lasted only one and half years. :(
