 Hi,
Just wondering what my-- a "hard" science PhD student with 4 pubs (3 first author and one 2nd in mainstream journals) at a major research university (highly ranked)--odds are for obtaining a GC based on EB1/EB2 category.

I have not paid much attention to it and of course have not done much research myself (not that I want somebody else to do my hw for me; far from it). Just wanted to hear  what's the "word on the street" first and take it from there, not that I'm gonna rely completely on what I get here. I guess it does not hurt to hear from people who've "been there, done that".

Do I stand a chance ? Ony serious advice please! Will appreciate any info.

Thanks.

NOoooooo . WE NEED TO SECURE THE BORDER FIRST

On a serious suggestion, I heard if you have 20 or more citations and few high ranking recommendations then you should be good. There were few folks here who were doing EB1, may be some one will pop up to share their experiences, or may be they have probably forgoten they ever asked for help in sajha :)

EB1 No chance
EB-2 NIW. Very little chance with the 4 publications and still in PhD student. Try finishing Ph.D and get 10 + publications and 50+ citations. On top of that you need to arrange at least 5 recommendation letters (would be nice if you can manage to get from the people who cited your work as an independent evaluator).

My suggestion would be finish Ph.D., get a job either post doc or any industrial. After that you can think of GC

No idea if there is high chance or not.Hopefully this immigration reform will bring some good news for STEM students. Good luck.

 Thanks for the input, everyone.

@ buzz: citation ==> 5/paper (not tangential, but contextual citations, FWIW)

@ blue_moon: Thats what I figured, too, hence, my lack of interest in the whole ordeal.

GC through EB-1
  •  PhD in Chemistry from top-tier research university
  • 14 publications, all in peer-reviewed journals
  • 3 patents
  • 8 recommendation letters from industry recognized experts
  • Employer (major pharmaceutical company) supported and paid for everything.
  • Took little over a year
Hope this helps.

Based on Obama;s common sense immigration reform proposal,
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2013/01/29/fact-sheet-fixing-our-broken-immigration-system-so-everyone-plays-rules
I think even the STEM PHD holder needs to find employment in the US so they can “Staple” green cards.

@ microbio : Of course! That is implied/understood.

Thanks for the perspective, everyone.
