I wanted to go Nepal during spring session taking a semester break because of my health issues and want to stay in Nepal for 4months. I had a surgery here and it cost me a lot and still I am paying for it. I am having similar symptons again so I wanted to make sure of everything. So what are the procedures for getting a semester break? I am from Minnesota.

Hope to get suggestions.

Thank you

what u paid for the surgery???? R u kidding. Common dude u could have got that for free dude. I havent heard ppl paying for the surgery in US. This is the first time i have heard someone paying...... Anyways if u want to go to Nepal. U dont have to ask anyone here in Sajha. Just go to the international Student Advisor and get ur I20 signed n then go to Nepal. It's easy as whipping someone's ass.

I appreciate your interest in my problem. I can talk with my advisors but just wanted to know if I need to show any specific documents ? Also if I get a semester break then do I need to take summer classes as some of my friends told me that I need to complete 24 credits a year so if I take a semester break then it will be 18 credits a year. So please suggest me. I dont want to take a semester break but paying hospital bills has left my pockets empty. So, after taking a break, I will be in good shape to be able to pay for my living and college fees.

Thank you very much

here's how it works:

if you take a break during regular fall or winter semesters (approx 18 credits per sem max for most colleges) then obviously, you need to repay for the lost credits. so it is the 18 hrs you need to payback, not 24 (at least this is what happens in my univ).

so, if you take a leave in the fall, then you'll have to either take more credits in winter and spring  OR take both spring and summer to repay the missed credits and then do fall and winter next year as your regular semesters. personally, i'd go with the second option, ie, fall (leave) - winter - spring - summer - fall - winter.

btw, some colleges don't have both spring and summer terms. in mine, we call may-june spring term and july-aug summer term and you can take upto 9 credits each term (thus, total 18 credits = filling in for the lost sem).

hope this helps!
and recover soon.

ariboo7 i would suggest you for your attitude adjustment !!which is of course free of cost if you go to some police station  but about health issue you gotta pay everything ....i got a fren who suffers very often from brain scizor illness two years ago he was adviced medication and was treated but the financial groups are still wooping his ass for his dues ...

fren about semester break !! i do understand your problem ! why don't you ask your International advisor ? Are you taking class this summer ?why don't you try to go back home during this summer and come back before fall? I don't know about your university but most of them should have summer break for intl students right now. It would be great if you go home and treat that illness as soon as possible you still got june and july left ..
Heal soon....

raju161 Thanks for the suggestion.  And abt that operation thing i still know that u dont have to pay. It depends on you how to skip that part of paying. My frien had his hand surgery. He had some rod inserted inside to make his hand function. He gets all these for free. M not kidding, m damn serious. In addition he got some benefits for free. It depends on you, If you act big shot then surely u'll be charged..........    I really feel bad for those who are paying......

for severe health conditions like yours, you should be able to take a semester off without worring about the number of credits u have to maintain. consult with your advisor. go there with the doccumentation of your health issues and seek advise.

Thank you for your suggestions. My university offer 12-18 credits for same price. i.e flat rate.

I cannot take sem break this fall 09 as I need to deal with all the bills and credits as well as want to be free from all the debts. In Spring 2010, I will go to Nepal taking a sem break for medical reasons as it will help me to meet my family, skip 1 sem money as well as better health. So, if I take sem break in Spring 2010 and take 18 credits in fall 2010 then will I be ok? I mean credit wise and in status?

Thank you guys.

Jai Nepal

..Yeah I went to Nepal last year Spring '08 and I came back after one and half month. After that I took one class in Summer 08. I think you need to take a class in summer to be in status. But I don't think you have to take 24 hrs in 1 year to be in status. I hope this helps. And yeah my friend did the same thing. He went Nepal this spring and He is  taking class in summer...

Good Luck and Take Care....

bash,

you missed the point. you skipped a semester AND took the summer classes once you returned. those summer classes covered up for you bro. had you not taken the summer classes, you could've let yourself into a big trouble. please don't spread misleading information.

devil,

please read the article in the following US govt website, specifically under the title "Students who depart the United States while in valid student status"

http://travel.state.gov/visa/laws/telegrams/telegrams_2780.html

and do consult your int'l office on campus. they know what's legit and what's bullshit.

cheers

It says that if I stay in Nepal for more than 5 months then I will be out of status. I am planning to go Nepal from Jan to March for 3 months. So, after returning should I take summer classes or I can continue like usual?

make it clear homie, how many terms your college offers. if you take
fall and winter (which most schools have, running from aug/sept to
march/april) sem classes, doesn't matter if you take or drop the spring
and summer classes as they lie in normal vacation period anyways.
however, if fall and spring are the two main semesters (instead of fall
and winter), and you plan to skip spring, then need to take summer term.

my best advice, go to int'l student office...they know a lot more than any of us here do.
