It's all about money. Monsanto is taking over farmers all over the world one by one. There are 100s of videos and documentaries you can find about monsanto and its wicked tactics to control seeds for every single crop. Nepal, for the most part, hasn't been under monsanto's paws yet (to my knowledge) but soon will the day come when people back home won't be allowed to save seeds like they've been doing so far. Here's a documentary about monsanto:

Maybe instead of just having respect for traditional way of thinking, its time to stand up to Monsanto right now. Its such a shame that USAID is promoting the vested interest of this monster company in a poor country like Nepal. Imagine the impact this is going to have among rural farmers who don't understand the implications of Genetically modified crops and the enslavement to seeds exclusively distributed by Monsanto.

Well, didn't know until now that monsanto has already started enslaving Nepali farmers. Thanks for the link pulsar_beat. This is really sad and outrageous. People are not fully aware and government doesn't care at all. This is going to be a disaster.

Thanks for the news pulsar beat. Yes it is time to stand up against Monsanto. Nepal might be one of the last frontiers in the war of these Gene giants. We should not in any cost allow Monsanto to take control over agriculture in Nepal, Please do some research. What seems as simple as seeds can be more powerful than bombs. It is one of the many ways they are trying to control population.
Please research Vandana Shiva'a videos and we will know what I am talking about.
Everybody please be ambassadors and spread the word against this evil company.
We need about 900 more signatures and last I heard was they are doing a big protest in front of the American Embassy in Nepal as well.

Even though the government has agreed to postpone Monsanto seeds, I think they are going ahead with the "pilot projects", similar projects that were vehemently protested in India, and hence they are targeting Nepal. For these seeds to destroy the native crops and spread, that's all they need: Few pilot projects through the corrupt hands of government officials. There are several nepali associations in universities here in north east US that are going to do awareness campaign about Monsanto's influence in Nepal and how we can better educate ourselves about these toxic crops. I'll keep you guys updated if i hear anything about this.
meanwhile, i think Anil bhattarai has written a series of excellent column articles in ekantipur. I am surprised that so few people have heard about this. Especially when USAID is promoting, we tend to think it is for a better cause.
