Hi,

I am a permanent residence of Canada and I have been working in US in H1B for 5 years. My employer has filed green card in EB3 but I must move to Canada soon with my family to keep our residency as it is expiring in 3 months. Its being very hard to take the decision as we have lived in US for so long (almost 12 years, did undergraduate and master’s here) but if we don’t go, we will lose our Canadian PR and not sure  if we will ever get US green card or not!!!

I was wondering if there are people in sajha community who have moved to Toronto from US and  are currently living there, who can share their overall opinion about moving there ( Job prosperity, quality of life, raising children, cost of living, health care etc.).

I would really appreciate any suggestions which will help us to make the decision.

Thanks a lot.

I have been living in GTA (greater Toronto area) for the last two years. Before I was in US where I did my undergraduate and work for about 5 years so I know how you are feeling. First let me start by saying that there are more similarities between these two countries than difference. If it is not for the colorful Canadian currency and speed limit in KM you may feel that you are living in another US state.

Now let’s start by first questions: JOB
There is no easy answer for this. Like in US, it all depends on you, your qualification and sorry to say this but your luck. What I can say for sure is you are in better situation to find a job if you have US degree and US experience as there are many US companies in GTA. Also, like in US I have seen many IT Deshi consulting in GTA these days.

COST: I find it funny that people compare cost of living in US vs Canada. You cannot practically do that as both countries are huge and Canada only has about 10% of US population. I moved from Virginia to Toronto so let me compare DC vs Toronto. Rent is pretty much the same, 1,200-1,500 for 2 bed apt. Sales tax is 13%, eating out (even in fast food joint) is about 15-20% more, gas currently is at $1.2 /liter (about $4.6/Gallon), car insurance (now this is huge) about 3 times higher here as in Canada because of the health law, the minimum limit is $1 million compare to about $100K-$200K.

WEATHER: If you are moving from south say FL or TX, be ready for some big change in weather but since I move from DC, I didn’t find weather to be that much of difference.

And the best part of moving to Canada is free health care. I have not given that much though on this when I was in US as I had health insurance from my employer but I was surprised on the money I saved. Also, remember they don’t take money for Social Security so your net pay check is actually more even your tax is slightly higher. And even the health care is free; I find it actually better in terms of quality in Canada. No waiting and less rude clinic staff compared to US. The school systems here are pretty much the same although College and University are much cheaper.

Hope this helps.

@anon, dude you must be watching too much Fox News. “if its major surgery or transplant then you will have to wait forever” actually it is totally opposite of that. You don’t have to wait if it is major surgery, if it is minor surgery than yes you have to wait but not that long and you get all the benefit( like short term disability, mandatory time off etc) during that waiting period.

Thanks All,
All you comments have been helpful.

@jonny, Thanks much for the information, it’s very helpful. Now, I  feel that I really want to move there.

@peacefulsoul,  When I  made up  my mind to move and told them abt it, the company wants to file on EB2, but I think it's more wiser to take what to have in your hand than to wait for which you aren't certain abt.

Grapes are sours who didn’t/wouldn’t get Green Card here in the US. Have been in Toronto thrice. Despite being bigger than US no places to move beside Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary for better opportunity Instead in US more than 100 cities you can move in and try for opportunity/ luck.
Everything so expensive in Canada. I am paying 55$ full coverage for my 2010 car but  it costs inToronto 250$ for 2005 car!!!!!!
I love US specially Texas being cheaper, more opportunity, affordable  housing you name it. Cauliflower 99 Cents, Onion 29 cents, potato 39, tomato 49 cents per pound you can’t beat it.
North or South Texas is the best.

I was wondering if there are any IT consulting firm in Canada like in US, where they train and find job for you. I tried to google but couldn't find one.

Anybody got answer to my million dollar question?

Here are my thoughts.
Job wise in canada its limited, you either have to live in TO or Montreal (need to know french) or vancouver and now they are getting good jobs in alberta. Other than that there is no jobs period but here in US almost every city has better oppertunity compare to what they have to offer for the city listed above except TO.

Living expenses: Lived down south paid 300/month for one bedroom appt, Moved to TO and paid 1000 dollars for 2 bedroom basement appt.
Weather: no spring (they call it winter break for spring break here in US)
Auto Insurence: Was paying 25/month for a car and moved to TO and ended up paying 175/month for the same car.
Gas price: 3.77/gallon here now and in TO its 1.29/liter now (3.8 liter/gallon)
Booze: Govt sales them and its double compare to here (that includes beer as well)
Sales Tax: 6.75% sales tax here now and it was 15% GST and PST in TO
Had a career job in TO but paid way less than what I was making here.

Savings wise Now you all do the math...:)

Good thing about canada: If you are female you get one year maternity leave in canada, where in US its not even a month.

If you have a career job in US who offers you insurence (which all of them does) you still can't compare .its almost the same.

Tired of srilankans trying to act like they are kale's...:)

I heard that one other person from Mad-Wisconsin is also coming to Toronto, leaving USA forever. Does it mean that USA is worse than Canada? (for raising family and getting PR)??

Aastha-TM...the answer to your question goes back again depends on what place you are in US. I love where iam at now to raise my kids.
Leaving the US forever for canada= better than going back to Nepal...(my opinion)

Johnny said: No waiting and less rude clinical staff compare to US...Hope you are not kidding me. Forget about the clinical staff I used to live in downtown TO and I know the grocery store is always packed (being inbetween 240 and 260 sherbourne) and one time one of the guy was waiting in line to check out his grocery and reading a magazine to kill time and a grocery stocker came upto him and asked him if he was buying the magazine and he said No,  the stocker took the magazine away from his hand and put it back in the shelf. Now you call them less rude...:)

Himalaya. How you doing brother?  Long time.  Well that was indeed rude bro but you know I was talking about my experience at my doctor's office.  Compared to US clinic where I have to pay (insurance from my paycheck plus co-pay) the clinic staff here were very pleasant.

johny, it depends. You got lucky ...
and based on what you are saying,
don't forget, they're the same englishmen who came 525 years ago and outrooted natives.
There are pros and cons everywhere, so does it even matter to discuss it?
Since you guys said so much stuffs, now for some onlookers, could be helpful to decide on where and how to live.
Other than that, this discussion is going nowhere.
Canada is good/bad
and
US is good/bad.
Happy?? cheers now

Bittertruth brother, Living in US for so long I bet you don't want to go back to Nepal right and you have your degree in your hand , want to start a career but you don't get H1 sponsored and don't want to be illegal here in US. So your last option is to go to canada and start your career and family down the line
Conclusion: If you don't have a choice from US get a PR and move to canada...

For those who think CANADA AS A LAST OPTION

Canada and last option, then you guys are day dreaming. Eventhough u come Canada, I am pretty much sure that u will keep complaining about this and that of Canada because you did not come because you really wanted to move. It is just because you could not succeed in US.

Getting PR in Canada has become as complicated as getting Green Card in US. It WAS easy... it WAS.
How are you applying? On what category? Does your skill category fall in the list? If not then, forget Canada.

Most of the skilled category gets exhausted within a day or two. Do not forget, people from around the world are applying and US graduates do not get any priority over rest of the world. You are no different than trash from India and Phillipines.

Try to live by yourself. Try kijiji.ca it is like craigslist in Canada.
Find some basement apartment which are normally cheaper. You will suffer a lot with Nepalese, so just stay away from them.
