has the tax changed for TVs? Before it was Rs 500 per inch, someone told me that its Rs 1500 flat now.

Can anyone who has recently taken TV to Nepal share their experience?

The custom thing have now been made easy. Nowadays they have a chart which lists the size of the tv and the amount you have to pay. i paid around 22,000 for 40' samsung. it varies a little if you have been out of the nepal for >6 months
but the most important thing is that if you take the tv from here, the coaxial jack in nepal does not fit the one you have in US ( i assume u r talking about taking it from US). so you have to take a NTSC to Pal converter jack .But if you have a cable connection which nowadays provides you with a reciever, then you just need a HDMI cable. Otherwise you need a PAL to NTSC digitial tuner , which costs around 130 in amazon.

so do a little bit research before you commit to it.

Thank you Dhwase for your advice. From what I've heard is, if you have lived outside Nepal for more than 6 months, Nepali govt. has come up with new customs rule where they don't charge any tax on one set of TV irrespective of the size of that TV. But, I don't know about the process of shipping it. Do we take them as our luggage or do we have to pay additional charge to take it with us? Can anyone please share his/her experience about this?

egf, as far as i know you can take a 14 " tv for free, if thats what you want. if you have lived outside nepal for more than 6 months, you pay a little bit less, may be a 1000 or so. Regarding the shipping, TV is considered as 1 piece of luggage in itself.

Btw, dont just rely on the company packaging. Get the bubble wraps from a hardware store and insert those to protect the screen at least.

recent experience
49" from US
nepal ma tax is around rs.30000
it will count as one of your luggage
airlines charged another $65 as oversize baggage(Qatar)

heard tax for 50" tv jumps to like Rs.60k.
there is a official chart somewhere about the taxes according to screensize
