move to Maine or some remote place, if you can find a job then settle there.
It will be safe there.
There will be great disaster in US in the coming few years.

Relocate to somewhere where jobs are relatively aplenty and climate is relatively mild. Avoid climatic extremes in the likes of Death Valley, CA or inner northern continental US and Alaska.

If you have young kids then you wanna move to somewhere that have public schools better rated than national average like Washington DC Metro.

If you are reaching retirement age, move to Alabama or Florida where taxes are more retirement friendly.

If you are looking for strong jobs market consider DC Metro.

If you are a party animal, consider Queens, New York where somebody will always figure out an occasion to celebrate.

For more affordable and stable real estate consider the Lone Star state of Texas or Nebraska, the good life state.

If you are worried about global warming and the rising sea-level consider the mile high city of Denver, CO.

No matter where you relocate to it's all about jobs jobs and jobs unless you have a million dollar sitting in your retirement account.

Good luck in your quest.

Pittsburgh, PA.    It has a compact downtown, hospitals, universities (Carnegie Mellon and Pitt  +) elem and secondary schools, great transportation, theaters, big box stores within reach, proximity to midwest, near DC, great sports teams, parks, playgrounds for all ages, safe to walk.  You should visit there. I like it.

Weather-wise (Among World's best weather): San Diego/Southern California cities

Opportunites: New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Boston, San Diego, DC

Party & lots of things to do: New York

City Life: New York, LA

Students with limited Budget go to Minnesota (for in-state tuition), Texas (for easy job in gas stations) or whereever you can manage your costs.

People with degrees go whereever you get the job, or where you have the best opportunities in your field, for example IT go to SF or for biotech such as boston or san diego or new jersey.

It again comes down to how you want to live, if you  move to California the cost of living would be higher but you apparantly do not have to deal with cold weather that much. So its give or take one way or the other. So simply asking what best place in the US to relocate is not enough, there are so many parameters such as crime rates, opportunities, job in your field, family-life, how you want to live, weather, schools for your kids and list goes on.....

While going thru all those posts, I wanted to jot down something realistic though it's like beauty lies in the eye of beholder. From my experience of being here in US just little over two years, listening to my friends and acquaintances who're here for years and going through Televisions, Newspapers and different websites frequently, following factors should be looked upon while we make relocation decision especially here in US:

1. The cost of living
2. The crime rate
3. Weather conditions
4. Job Opportunities

Though these four factors may have different hierarchy for different persons, I personally will go to look in for each of those factors and take a median to make my decision. Though the originator of this thread has particularly saught suggestion for west and/or southern side of US, my recommendation here would be northern virginia which is also considered as Greater Washington DC Metro Area. A very easy and nearest access to nation's capital, profound presence of large companies including banks and consulting companies, government contractors, federal agencies and renowned academic institutions makes this area a big platform for longterm and short term career opportunities. On top of that, northern virginia especially Fairfax county and Arlington County are secured to live and are center for nepalese settlements. Nice weather ( though it won't be like California) which includes but not limited to very rare tornados and snow storm and high speed wind makes this place even more appealing. When it comes to a family living, there are some of the finest schools including Thomas Jefferson School of Science and Technology in Northern Virginia. World Famous Universities like George Town, George Washington are here while emerging universitiy like George Mason also appeals growing number of students and another academic haven UVA is 2 hours drive from here.

There're a lot of reasons which will sufficiently strengthen my statement that Northern Virginia is one of the best place to relocate in . The cost of living however is not much cheaper but the presence of growing opportunities subsides that negativity hopefully.
