what is oracle client access and ODBC... why do i need those. I am having hard time understanding.. DBA professionals please enlighten me

You  have to configure the tnsnames for the client. from your server copy tnsnames.ora and sql.net files to the appropriate location on the client machine after that check the tnsname inside the tnsnames.ora file.
