After struggling for years trying to find the cause of my back pain, I finally found something that helped me and I'd like to share that with the Nepali folks out here.

First, remember that I had no structural issue; i.e. no herniated disk, pinch nerve etc; that was evident in MRI/X-rays. Also, I am not a medical professional, so please consult your doctor before you try this out.

I tested for Vitamin D deficiency and my level was lower than recommended level. The test is also called 25(OH)D and level under 50 nmol/L is considered deficient. The doctor could prescribe you to a strong regiment of Vitamin D (10,000 to 50,000 IU). In my case, that did the trick.

You can also get over the counter vitamin D for upto 5000 IU. I think daily dose of 2000 IU to 5000 IU should help once you are off the doctor's prescription. Vitamin D is primarily received from sunlight and some report say a large percent (over 50% to be conservative) are deprived of it.

Try it out (get the over the counter medication), I am taking 5000 IU vitamin D supplement (any brand) and it is helping me out. But again, consult your doctor before you start any regimen.

The test was covered by my insurance so unfortunately I don't know how much it costs otherwise. I did a quick search and saw that you can do in-home test for $99, but I won't recommend this. Things like these should be done in supervision of a medical professional.

Since OTC (over the counter) supplement for 5000 IU Vitamin D doesn't need a prescription; I'd have recommended you to try this out on yourself for a month and see if the pain goes away; however again not being a medical professional, I cannot make that recommendation. Please consult a doctor in any case.

There are also some good articles on the web and printed materials (books) about Vitamin D deficiency and how it has become an epidemic. Vitamin D is actually a harmone and helps regulate the immune system.

If you want to be safe, go out under the sun as much as you can and take 2000 IU vitamin D. I believe I can atleast recommend this much.

Avi bro, thanks for the info. Was your back pain a lower back pain? I have a lower back pain but no structural issue but when i sit i have this annoying pain which i have been going through for several years. I go to chiropractor sometimes and do little bit of yoga and strech myself and try to keep it control but can't get rid of it fully.  I am glad it worked for you. Any suggestions? Thanks

Allegro bro

Mine was low back, and sometimes buttocks area. But I have heard it helps with many other pains, any muskuloskeletal pain. So it doesn't have to be back pain. Many pains such as the ones due to arthritis are hyper active immune system and Vitamin D helps regulate this.

Again, the suggestion is to get your blood tested for D deficiency. Meanwhile you can go out more (under the sun) and take OTC vitamin D as well.

Please don't forget to come back and comment on whether your pain goes away or not because of this; it will help many more. Those who have found this treatment useful, please share. Nobody told me for 10 years and I had to endure all the pain; I don't want another person to go through that.

My back pain was gone after doing some yoga posture. I never had guessed about Vit D deficiency. As soon as I read this post, I am quite sure most of us would have Vit D deficiency because we rarely get a chance to get sunlight-exposure to get enough Vit D.

i messed up my lower back (from deadlift) last november. i didn't go to doctor. It was pretty bad for first week and started getting better. I finally started to workout again 3 months later. Now it doesn't give me any problem except it is stiff in the morning ( but no pain). After that injury i am very careful about posture and core strength. Hamstrings and core muscle  supports lower back so don't forget to workout out those muscle to get strong back. I didn't evern realize how i used to bend my lower back when i sat in class and while picking things up. But not anymore.

Thanks avi i will definately increase Vit D on my diet.
