Sathi ho. I will be starting my first professional job soon. I don't know what to expect as I have only worked in gas stations and sandwhich stores. What are some of the work etiquette that I should know? Like how I should behave, what I should say. And should I bring my own luch or just eat out the first few days? What should I expect? Ekdamn nervous chu. Lack of confidence.

Some personal stuffs.

1. Take bath every day in the morning before going to office.
2. do not eat onions stuffs in the breakfast and Lunch, it really smell bad and people may not like it, like in the case of MOMO
3. Save clean, they do not like mustache much.
4. formal dress, tie not necessarily needed.
5. change inner dress (like ganji, kattu, moja) everyday.

congrats for your new path!
Thanks to all sajha users for the inputs. I just want to add couple since most of them are covered already:
  • Invest a lot of time in this early phase of your carrier (possibly 8-10 hours a day). Dont take any chances.
  • Eventhough you might not have in-depth technical skills , your enthusiastic towards work and hard work will definitely count. So be it.
  • Dont forget to follow up on any action items that you need to complete. Thats how you learn.
  • At last, I want you to update this thread after 4 months. Lets see how you progress further.

1) Be attentive, try and listen to what they say and be very clear about your task before you begin, You don't want to be half-way through your work and then realize you have to do it all over again.

2) Always wear a smile and strike up small talk, ask them about their family and themselves. Ask open ended questions though, Americans love talking about their families. Casually mention how grateful you are to have this job.

3) Be on time and always volunteer to do things whenever people reach out to you.

4) Get a haircut, get a gym membership, and wear well-fitting clothes.

1) Shower every morning. And do not put a lot of body spray or cologne. We honestly do not appreciate someone coming in changing the smell of the entire place. However, use deodorant.
2) Wear formal clothes.
3) Do not talk too much.
4) DO NOT MICROWAVE THE NEPALI FOOD. It will stink. If you are eating Nepali food, make sure you wash your mouth after you eat and have some mouth freshner. Just try not to put masala and you will be fine in this department.
5) Be punctual... I am not a big fan of getting in early and stick in late.  Punctuality means getting there on time and putting in your hours. You might have to stay late sometimes, but do not make that a habit.
6) If you have questions, ASK!
7) If you are new, unless you lied in your resume, we do not expect you to know everything. Take your time. It is quality we care about, not quantity. However, quantity with quality is not frowned upon. Do not rush.
8) Like it or not, suck up to your boss.
9) Lastly, do remember: THERE IS A PROBATIONARY PERIOD.

Moonshine, usually how long does the probationary period last?
And when I address people at work, do I just call them by their first name or do I have to say Mr/Ms?
Thanks again for the responses.

Just be yourself respect others and seek respect feom other. Do not make too many rules for your yourself to fit in the crowd. Natural people will have no prob adjusting. My theory- have a good snce of humor, laugh usualluy make people forget too many flaws. This is freepotrts 2 cents for you. :)

Hi everyone. I totally forgot that I had posted this thread until I just saw it. Thanks Moonshine for bringing it back to life.

This posting of mine is not going to be positive but I will still update you guys on what is happening at work. Before I even get to it, let's just say things can't be worse.

I like the job but I hate hate the work environment. I am having a very hard time fitting into the work culture. People are selfish to the core. I just don't understand them. For example, if i ask them questions on how I should go about doing something, they show me their attitude and I get that vibe that they don't really want to help me out but fast forward a couple of hours later, they will ask whether I want to hang out with them. I don't get it. Am i a friend or a foe to them? If I am a friend, shouldnt they be helping me out if I have a problem. If I am a foe, why do they want to hang out with me?

It is all so confusing. And having a crazy manager does not help the problem. She is like a person who is having PMS every single day of the month. She is all happy one moment and then all emotional the next moment. She screams at me, puts me down, shows off what she thinks are big achievements, all the nonsense then after all this, she still wants to hang out with me outside of work. I really don't know what is going on at work.

I feel so uncomfortable and out of place at work. It is hard to find common grounds with anyone. I have just stopped talking. These days I just go in, do what I am told and get out. I feel like there is no point in being friendly.

If I ask for help. This is how it goes down or have went down. I asked one of my co-workers to help me with a certain client on the phone because I was not familiar with what he was talking about. Damn bastard went to the manager and talked about how it is not his job blah blah blah and then the manager got on my neck and blah blah blah at me. All this because of one simple phone call.

I dread going to work every morning. I am not good with expressing myself so I can't really put it in words about how I really feel but it is bad. I have gained about 10 pounds after I started work because of all the stress. I feel tired all the time. I just can't wait to get out of this place.

First of all the work environment you described sounds a little toxic; is it sales/service kind of job? If possible look towards other opportunities; just don't tell your current employers until you actually have an offer.
Till then, don't take work life too personally. Maybe the approach you have taken is a little strange to them. Do your work and see if there is anything you can do to make this thing ok.

star 15 , what you have seems to be common problem among us.

Try to make your work life seperate from personal life.
BUt I believe you said your manager is crazy, but she can be helpful in reality. You know who barks doesnt bite, its a old quotation, She might be helpful in re4ality, but those who doesnt speaks can be dangerous, they have everything being planned from inside, u gotta be careful from from them.If she is angry she might have a reason, her brother or husband also works in the same place and you might have tried to fire him for some reason and she might have retaliated, did you see from that angle?
I have heard lots of stories abt this work place, even in my work place, a young guy made fired a 65 old guy coz he doesnt know proper english (chinese) and makes mistakes in writing report , the young worker instead of helping him , he just complains to the supervisior, it wanst a big deal for just correcting his english if its a teamwork, the coworker just want start to deliverable, at last the supervisior fired him and he came and spoke to that young coworker with tears in his eyes, now you made me fire this old guy and you have mde your job secured , good bye, it was kind of so boring day, i still remeber that day with tears in 65 yr old chinese,

but mu suggestion will be try to mingle with all coworker, dont depend on just one guy, you need a plan b if worse things arises.
