Maybe i didnt put it correctly. I was referring to nepalese students coming in fresh from nepal. Since they dont have much idea of when to step out of the way or what kinds of places to live and work in, it would be only better to SUGGEST them to not make southern states a priority, because unlike some of you who are alrady there, they have 0 experience.

If he had an insurance, I guess they will pay for the body to be delivered to his parents in Nepal, if not, we can all contribute and make arrangements to send his body home "where it belongs" if his parents are not coming. Someone from Dallas can fill in us with details, I have been making phone calls to dallas since morning but no one seems to know him, he must be relatively new in the area..

All you having friends in Dallas/Arlington might be able to find more.

TEXAS once again has shown its true texan color. I'm here since past 3 yrs and have not a single good experience. I have some real bad problems that's making me stay here. I've called a couple of friends in North Lake and they're trying to find out about his family and all. I'll be posting as soon as i get info. Thanks all for being united once again.

This is a very sad news. May the soul rest in peace and god give patience to his family and friends.
Death of Shekhar should be noticible for all Nepali students trying to come America for undergrad. It is not mystery that most Nepali students without good funding from school or family end up working for risky , menal jobs. Mostly to the Indians , pakis or other immigrants who let them work but do not hesitate to take full unethical advantage of this lack of work permit.
There are thousands of Shekhar working in the USA in diffrent states. Some are getting killed slowly, while some are getting killed tragically like Shekhar. We have to stop false impression about life in America to youngersters in Nepal and tell them the real thing. let them come here for masters with TA from universities, like most indians do.

Once again, may the soul rest in peace....

The kid was from Balaju (Nepaltar to be exact). He was my friend's neighbour. I do not know if his family is coming here or not. But again, thanks to all the Sajhaites for their kind words of condolence. I'll try and find out if the family is coming or not and if they will require help or would rather spend their time alone in this time of grief.

Its extremely saddening to hear a fellow Nepalese shot dead so ruthlessly. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Didn't know guncrime is so rampant in the southern states. I am thinking of applying for my master's in the US next year, I will certainly try to avoid the south. I don't have much idea of guncrime or how to cope with such situations since this is a relatively quiet part of Europe with guncrime limited only to the underground gangsters.

Once again, my condolences to the family of Shekhar Regmi.

world_map jee, it's wrong to make generalizations. I'm in south n' haven't gone through single incident even verbally. Though whites sometimes tell themselves that there're lot of conservatives out here. I've not met people out of univ; may be that's the reason. I'm writing it again coz' i don't want you to lose a good opportunity in south just b'coz of rates here. Do you know which states have the highest crime rates? It's New Jersey. We've to take pre-cautions. What happened to our nepali friend was very unfortunate, and this is the time to provide any help if we can.

Gwayjo ji,
Its indeed a perception distortion to stereotype and generalize. Thanks for your suggestions. I will try not to lose academic opportunities just because of these kinds of incidents.

years of process, thousands of dollars for visa application to plane ticket fee, to the college tution to come for undergrad. Then they have to work like illegal thieves to make money so they could pay their tution. Why not just come for masters, or only come if you have good financial support from the school or your family.
l would say let us make aware our youngesters in Nepal about the true situation over here.
may god give peace to Shekar's soul.
