Kathmandu, December 21 - Cadres of the Maoist affiliated Unions this afternoon attacked the offices and personnel of Himal Media. According to reports Maoists affiliated Hotel and Restaurants workers union cadres attacked Himal Media publisher Kunda Dixit and Managing Director Aushutosh Tiwari among others. They also vadalised the offices of the publications. There are reports of injuries to journalists and other personnel of the publications.

Most important thing... forget about Nepal's problem.. have fun.

माओबादीहरु पुराणको भष्मासुर हुँदैछन। अरुलाई हिर्काएँ भन्ने लाग्ला अहिले तर आफ्नै खुट्टामा बन्चरो हान्दैछन। लोकतन्त्रको दुहाई दिएर राजा माहाराजाका नामहरुमा स्थापित स्थान र संघ संस्थाका नाम फेरेर अग्रगामी बिचारधाराको मन्चमा बिराजमान हुन खोज्नेहरुलाई लोकतन्त्र भनेको के हो त्यस्को आभाष सम्म पनि छैन कि जस्तो लाग्छ। माओबादीहरुले परीबर्तनको बिगुल फुकेको हो। सत्य हो। तर पृथ्बीनारायणको नाममा ज्ञानेन्द्रले सिंहासन दाबी गर्नु र हिंजो उठाएको परीबर्तनको नाममा माओबादीहरुले आज भोलीको लागि राज्यलाई आफ्नो पेवा सम्झिनु उस्तै कुरा हो।

माओबादीहरु दिन प्रतिदिन असफल हुँदै जाँदै छन। हतियारधारी राजनैतिक दल असफल हुँदै जानु देश र नागरीकहरुको लागि दुर्भाग्यको कुरा हो। माओबादीहरुका असफलता प्रति उनीहरुलाई सचेत गराउनु, अनि उनीहरुको हिंसा प्रति रहेको घृणीत उन्मादको निन्दा गर्नु हाम्रो दायित्व पनि हो।

जी पी जी, नेपेले जे कुरा गरे पनि उनलाई गाली गर्ने प्रबृती छोडनु पर्यो। नेपेले लेखेका केही पंक्तिहरु म यहाँ उल्लेख गर्दैछु। यी पंक्तिहरुमा उनलाई गाली गर्नु पर्ने के कारण छ?

"प्रचण्डले नेपाली जनताको लोकतन्त्रवादी जनादेशबाट प्राप्त सत्तामा रहुन्जेल अर्थोक केही गतिलो कुरा नगरेपनि कम्तीमा यत्ति बुझ्ने काम गरिदिए पुग्थ्यो -- माओवादीको र नेपाली जनताको प्राथमिकता र आवश्यकताहरु आकास-पाताल भिन्न छन् । नेपाली जनताको प्राथमिकता हो - वर्तमान अराजक स्थितिको अन्त्य । र आवश्यकता हो – अर्थतन्त्र ।

 

त्यसको विपरित, माओवादीहरुको आवश्यकता भनेको उनिहरुको व्यवहारबाट के देखिन्छ भने “माओवादी मण्डलेवाद” को निरन्तरता, निरन्तर गाईजात्रे विलासी शब्दजात्रा र ट्यामट्याममा साम्यवादी अफिमको सेवन ।

माओवादीलाई नेपाली जनताको जनादेश त्यसको निम्ती प्राप्त भएको होईन, बाबा ठाकुरे ! माओवादीको घैंटामा घाम कसले लगाईदिने?"

यदी हिंजो र आज पनि नेपे माओबादीका समर्थक रहेछन (जुन उनले खण्डन गरेका छन जस्तो लाग्छ) भने त उनीबाट त्यस्ता शब्दहरु माओबादी प्रति लक्षित हुनु झन राम्रो कुरा होईन र?

गणतन्त्रको बिरोध गर्ने सबै माओबादी, अनि माओबादीको बिरोध गर्ने सबै राजाबादी भन्ने धंगधगीबाट उम्किनु पर्यो।

राजनीतिमा आउन ज्ञानेन्द्र प्रतिबन्धित त छैनन। सक्छन भने उनी पनि नागरीकका प्रतिनिधी बनुन। जनताबाट चुनीएर आउन, देश चलाउन। म त्यसको सम्मान गर्छु। पृथ्वीनारायणको दुहाई दिएर गद्दीमा बस्न पाईन्न भन्ने बिचार मेरो पनि हो। माओबादी लगायतका राजनैतिक दलहरुले ज्ञानेन्द्रलाई काम गर्न नदिएका पनि हुन। एउटा राजनैतिक दलले अर्को राजनैतिक दललाई काम गर्ने नदिने चलनै हो। राष्ट्रिय हितको हकमा त्यो लागु नहुनु पर्ने हो तर हाम्रो देशमा बिरोधको लागि बिरोध राजनैतिक शक्तिहरुको खुराक हो, मुद्दा जे सुकै होस।

देशको हालत ठिक छैन। माओबादी सत्तामा छन, उनीहरुले बिरोधको धम्कि दिन सुहाउँदैन। उनीहरुको काम आतंक रोक्ने हो, मच्चाउने हैन। उनीहरुले नै नियम कानुनको धज्जी उडाउने हो भने कस्ले पालना गर्ने? किन गर्ने?

हिमाल पत्रिका माथि भएको आक्रमण माओबादीहरुको हुकुमीतन्त्रको प्रमाण हो। माओबादी नेतृत्वले त्यस्ता गतिबिधीलाई रोक्ने मात्रै हैन, गलत तत्वहरुलाई सार्बजनिक रुपमा दण्डीत पनि गर्न सक्नु पर्छ।

बिचारको खण्डन बिचारले गर्नु पर्यो मुडकी र बन्दुकले हैन। हिमालले केही गल्ती गरेको छ भने त्यसको लागी प्रशासन छ, अदालत छन। आफै सरकारमा बसेर आफै कानुनी राज्यको अस्तित्वलाई चुनौती दिन सुहाउँदैन।

Thanks, too, to Arnico, for visiting the Himal office yesterday -- hours after learning about the attack.

I am fine now - primarily because other colleagues shielded me, protected me and put themselves in harm's way to take the shots and the punches aimed at me by unknown assailants in the Himalmedia meeting room, where a weekly corporate meeting was in progress when the attackers stormed in.  

My deepest thanks and gratitude to my colleagues who, on their own and acting quickly, did their best to resist the attacks of about 50 goons.

NAC denounces the attack on himalmedia, nepal

 

 

The Nepalese Americas Council (NAC), a coordinating body for 29 North American Nepalese-American member organizations, as undersigned, is disturbed by the news that on December 21, 2008, a group of disgruntled individuals have physically attacked the staff and journalists of Himalmedia.  Himalmedia is the publisher of the Nepali Times, Himal Khabarpatrika, and Himal South Asia.

 

Free press is a crucial pillar of democracy, and investigative journalism serves the societal interest in a democracy. By intimidating and attacking the press, the perpetrators are threatening the viability of the emerging democracy in Nepal. NAC is seriously concerned about such attacks, and strongly denounces this assault on Himalmedia.

 

NAC steadfastly supports the ongoing democratic process in Nepal. The December 21 attack on press is a setback to this process, and if unchecked, such assaults can seriously undermine the progress of democracy. We further believe that if any individual or group wants to contest any written report or news, they can do it by writing rebuttals and challenging the media reports.  However, Violence and physical attacks on journalist can not be tolerated.

 

NAC appeals to the government of Nepal, civil society, journalists, and community leaders to condemn such attacks and let the press function in a free and secure environment. We also urge the government to bring the perpetrators of this attack to full justice.

The latest attack on Himal media, in a hindsight, has been good to all democracy, freedom and rule of law loving people in the sense that it has alerted all, hit the home hard and started to bring them together to fight for the cause.

 

जहाँसम्म आक्रमणकारीहरु (जसलाई “माओवादी मण्डले” को संज्ञा दिंदा नेपाली घरेलु राजनैतिक शब्दकोषको ठीक उपयोग गरेको ठहरिन्छ जस्तो लाग्छ, नत्र त ‘माओवादी तालिबान’ भने पनि हुन्छ) को कुरा छ, ती र तीनका धर्मगुरुहरुले के बुझ्नु पर्दछ भने प्रेस स्वतन्त्रता भनेको नेपाली जनताको अहरणिय स्वतन्त्रता र अदम्य प्रतिबद्धता हो, जसलाई माओवादी क्रान्तिकारी मुल्लाहरुको कुनै पनि धर्म-घोषणा वा छल-कपटले कुन्ठीत गर्न सक्दैन ।

 

माओवादी मण्डलेहरुको गुनासो के रे भने हिमाल मिडियाले मजदुरको विरुद्ध लेख्यो रे । किन र ? मजदुरको विरुद्ध लेख्‍न हुन्न ? जतिभने पनि लेख्‍न हुन्छ । सम्विधान र प्रचलित कानूनको दायराभित्र रहेर जेसुकै लेख्‍ने स्वतन्त्रता जोसुकैलाई हुन्छ, छ र रहिरहनेछ छ । यो नेपालको अन्तरिम सम्विधान समेतको र लोकतन्त्रको त आधारभूत कुरा नै हो- माओवादी मण्डले र तीनका धर्मगुरुले बुझुन् । नबुझे घाटा उनीहरुलाई नै छ । घाटा कसरी भन्ने कुरा सिधा छ – 'लोकतन्त्रको क ख ग पनि नजानेका स्वाँठहरु लोकतान्त्रिक नेपालको शासक रे !' भनेर जगहसाई हुदैन ?

 

माओवादीलाई लोकतन्त्रको मूलप्रवाहमा आउन र सक्छन् भने नेपालीलाई सुशासन दिनको लागि समेत भनेर नेपाली मतदाताहरुले माओवादीलाई शासनको एक ईमान्दार अवसर दिएकै हुन् ।

 

[ साझाका केही मित्रहरु माओवादीलाई सत्तामा पुर्‍याएको नेपेले हो भनेर उनीहरुलाई नेपालको चुनावको बारे कौनेकुरा अत्तोपत्तो नभएको जस्तो अज्ञानता देखाईरहेका छन्, तर त्यो कुनै विषय भएन । तर पनि निर्वाचनको बेलामा सुतेर बसेका बुझिने यी कुम्भकर्णहरुलाई यति त बताईदिनपरिहाल्यो – माओवादीलाई सत्तामा पुर्‍याएको नेपेले होईन, गएको अप्रिल महिनामा भएको सम्विधानसभाको निर्वाचनमा ३१ लाख मतदाता अर्थात् नेपाली कांग्रेसका भन्दा ७ लाख बढी अनि एमालेका भन्दा ८ लाख बढी मतदाताहरुले मत हालेर (समानुपातिक निर्वाचनको मात्र डेटा हो यो) माओवादीलाई सत्तामा पुर्‍याएका हुन् । ]

 

माओवादीलाई जसरी सत्तामा पुर्‍याए, आवश्यक परे त्यसरी नै गलहत्याउने अधिकार र सामर्थ्य राख्तछन् नेपाली मतदाताहरु । र अर्को निर्वाचन तीन वर्ष भन्दा टाढा छैन । त्यसैले अलिक दूर नै भए पनि द्वारहरु छन् ।

 

तर कति भने, मतदाताहरुको लागि माओवादीभन्दा गतिलो वैकल्पिक दल पनि उपस्थित हुनुपर्‍यो । त्यसो भएन र नेपाली मतदाताहरुले पहिले झै निर्गतिला दलहरुमध्ये एक छान्नुपर्‍यो भने चाही खत्तम भो ।

 

यसको सारांश के हो भने, नेपालको राजनैतिक, रणनैतिक र शुद्ध नैतिक भकुण्डो अब माओवादी-ईतर दलको परिसरमा छ । माओवादी‍ईतर दलहरु मध्ये कम्तीमा एउटाले आफुलाई बौद्धिक, नैतिक र सांगठनिक रुपमा सशक्त बनाएर नेपाली मतदाताको लागि छान्नयोग्य विकल्पको रुपमा प्रस्तुत हुनुपर्‍यो ।

 

केकस्तो स्थिति छ त अहिले ? निराशाजनक । माओवादीको झुर हनिमुनको वावजुद नेपाली कांग्रेस वा एमाले अहिले माओवादीको विकल्प हुने ल्याकत (बौद्धिक, नैतिक र सांगठनिक सबै तहमा) राख्तैनन् ।

 

त्यही भएर मैले माओबादीलाई तत्कालै सत्ताच्युत गरेर नेपाली कांग्रेसलाई सत्तामा पुर्‍याउने खालको खेल (“प्रजातान्त्रिक मोर्चा” को बहस चलिरहेको छ नि, हो त्यो) मा भर पर्न सकिन्न भनेको हुँ ।

 

तर माओवादीको अब स्पष्ट गोचर भईरहेको अपशासन (bad governance) लाई चुपचाप सहने, शंकाको सुविधा दिईरहने वा माओवादीको बौद्धिक छलाङको आसामा बसिरहने समय सकिईसक्यो र यदि हामी (नेपाली जनता) चुपचाप बसिरहे माओवादीले यसको गलत सन्देश पढेर झनझन लापरवाह, सनकी र दम्भी कुशासक हुँदैजाने स्पष्ट सम्भावना एकातिर, र अर्कातिर माओवादीले अहिले जनताबाट एउटा गतिलो थप्पड पाएको खण्डमा कम्तीमा माओवादी मण्डलेवाद अलिक कम गर्न बाध्य हुन्थे कि भन्ने आसा भएकोले माओवादी अपशासन विरुद्ध र माओवादीले नियन्त्रण गर्न नसकेको अराजकताको विरोधमा एउटा देशव्यापी प्रदर्शन हुन जरुरी देखेको हुँ मैले ।

 

यस्तो देशव्यापी प्रदर्शन एउटा दुईटा घटना विशेषको निम्ती मात्र होईन कि माओवादीको समग्र incompetence को विरुद्ध हुनुपर्छ । अन्यथा यो व्यापक र प्रभावकारी हुनेछैन ।

 

सारांशमा मेरो मुख्य बहस र छटपटी हो: माओवादीको अपशासनको विरोधमा एउटा विशाल जनप्रदर्शन आवश्यक भइसकेको छ । माओवादीलाई सत्ताच्युत नै त गर्न होईन, तर एउटा बलियो नसिहत दिन भने हो । यसपछि पनि माओवादीको शासनमा गुणात्मक सुधार देखिएन भने तिनीहरुविरुद्ध जसले जसरी लडेपनि त्यो उचित र समर्थनयोग्य हुनेछ ।

No matter what kind of sweet words are used, the fact stands that the Maoists killed over 15,000 Nepalis to get to this powerful position. They got to this position because they played with hope.

After planting hope in the minds of villagers they came to the cities. They even planted hope in the mind of city dwellers, the hope that they might be a better government than any other they've seen since all of them have been bad.

Not even a year passed since they came to govt they have been practicing anti democratic actions in many different sectors of governance. They are still getting away with daylight robbery, murder, extortion and now this ultimate betrayal of press freedom the sole measure of democratic practices.

Till now, the Maoists have seeped into most sectors of life in nepal, including industry, labor unions, banks and many other infrastructures, and they continue to harness anti democratic practices.

I think something is seriously wrong with you if you still have any hope from the Moaists as Nepe has expressed clearly as he had clearly preached for the hope from Maoists before they came into power.

How long are you going to be fooled with the promise of this hope that's never going to come true? Time is what they need to seep into other infrastructures of the nation, namely the army. Once they seep into the army, there is no turning back and they will create the constitution that gives them scott free access to everything they want to do.

I hope at that moment, Nepe will stop pedalling hope and say "Laaaaa sorryy hai, malai ke tha?".

माओवादीको सत्तारोहण माओवादीको कारणले कम र माओवादीका वैकल्पिक शक्तिहरु (राजतन्त्र, नेपाली कांग्रेस, एमाले) को अयोग्यताको कारणले धेरै हो ।

हाल त्यस्तो विकल्प नभएकोले अहिले अधिकतम गर्न सकिने भनेको माओवादीलाई नेपाली जनताको विशाल विरोधप्रदर्शन जस्तो झापट दिएर यथासम्भव ठीक ठाममा राख्‍ने प्रयास गर्नु हो ।

 

तर त्यस्तो विरोधप्रदर्शन पनि सामन्तवादी शक्तिहरुको नितान्त अनुपस्थितिमा र नेपालको गणतान्त्रिक परिवर्तनसंग “identify with” हुनेहरुको पहल र उपस्थितिमा हुनुपर्छ । तबमात्र त्यस्तो प्रदर्शन राजनैतिक रुपले legitimate र नैतिक रुपले अपराजेय हुनेछ ।

 

गणतन्त्रविरोधीहरु, जोजति छन्, तीसंग न त political legitimacy छ, न त moral strength नै, कम्तीमा अहिलेका दिनसम्म । त्यसकारण त्यो शक्तिको खासै उपयोगिता र मूल्य छैन अहिलेलाई ।

I have one suggestion, though. I am tired of people doing banda after some unfortunate incidence happens. For example, when the YCL killed two guys, they organized Nepal banda. And this time, when something happened in Himal media, journalists went to restricted area and organized some protest there. A relative of the people murdered told me that he didn't want his supporters to go to street and do chakkajam after the murder, but he couldn't muster courage to tell that to his relatives/supporters. Now, you are a victim, can't you go to your supporters and say this, "whatever you do, please don't break the rule in my name. I know the Maoists are fu(kheads, but let's do things without crowding KTM too much."

As for GP's rant against Nepe, I say GP you are a big moron. People's ideas evolve, your too probably did. What matters is what a person is thinking at a particular time. If you think you are oh so revolutionary who knew everything before hand, even then a little humility is better. Otherwise, stop pretending, and ranting against Nepe everywhere. Nepe has his own thoughts, and I disagree with him a lot of times (though, admittedly I don't read sajha regularly),but you are way too aggressive against him than warranted.

PM blames 'party infiltrators' behind Himalmedia assault, assures probe into the incident

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Monday denied any direct involvement of Maoist party in the assault on Himalmedia Sunday and claimed that "some immoral agents" who have "infiltrated" into the Maoist party and ranks were in fact involved it.

He also expressed commitment that the government will probe the incident and take action against those involved in the attack.

In a meeting with leaders of the civil society at his official residence in Baluwatar Monday morning, PM Dahal expressed sadness over the incident and urged everyone to fight against these "infiltrators" with determination and that they will have all the support needed [in this] from the government.

Representatives of Kathmandu based Model Hospital were also in the civil society group that had gone to meet PM Dahal to raise concern about the problems Maoist-aligned workers' union have created in Model Hospital and Sunday's attack on Himalmedia by Maoist-aligned trade unions.

"There are people who in the guise of the Maoists are engaged in giving a bad name to the party," he said, adding "our party is constantly struggling to rid the party off these elements."

PM Dahal, addressing a function by South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) in Jiri, Monday, said that he has already instructed to catch those involved in attacking media.

"Yesterday I instructed Home Minister to do everything to catch the culprits whoever they may be. Today, I called Information Minister and gave him similar instruction," he said.

Meanwhile, Federation of Nepalese Journalist (FNJ) has called the assault by Maoist aligned trade unions on Himalmedia as a "naked aggression" against press freedom and strongly condemned the "brutal attack" on the media house and media persons.

Talking to Nepalnews.com, Poshan K.C, general secretary of FNJ, said that the attack against the press that fought for freedom and democracy in the country alongside political parties by cadres of very party that is in power openly flouts the government's commitment to freedom of expression.

K.C said that FNJ has repeatedly called upon the government to guarantee protection to media houses and media persons in the past "but incidents of assaults [against the media] have occurred in appalling regularity".

"What this shows is that the government appears not to take the matter seriously, so we have been left no with no option but to take to the streets," he said, adding that FNJ is planning to organise a rally in the capital today to protest the incident. nepalnews.com ag Dec 22 08

Now its Kantipur’s turn, threatens a YCL leader

In the wake of attack by pro-Maoist workers on Himalmedia, a leader of the Maoist-affiliated Young Communist League (YCL) has threatened that it is now the turn of Kantipur.

According to the report in Kantipur daily, Bhaktapur district president of YCL Deepshika has warned that they will now target Kantipur for opposing the Maoists in big headlines.

“The hooliganism of Kantipur is increasing,” he said. “Just because it is media, it cannot write whatever it likes.”

In Biratnagar, pro-Maoist workers staged a sit-in in front of regional office of Kantipur by forwarding 12-point demands. They demanded pay rise, among others.

Meanwhile, the APCA publication, which brings out The Himalayan Times and Annapurna Post, has said that pro-Maoist workers manhandled some of its staffers on Monday. They manhandled the staffers and forcefully installed their board in reception area.

I have zero sympathy for Kunda Dixit and the media in general. Even at the height of maoist violence and killing spree the nepali media instead of strongly castigating the maoists stood firmly behind them with only occasional voices of criticism that too only when this fraternity was at the receiving end. Most times the nepali media were too busy glorifying the “people’s war” and heaping praises on maoist leaders while demonizing a benevolent king. It was the politicians running the country since 1990 and NOT the ex-king. So why is the ex-king being blamed for all the ills in the country? Hello!!! Am I missing something here? It’s like blaming your dog for failing in the exam. It’s that absurd. Quite frankly, I don’t care two hoots if the nepali media fades away into oblivion. I for one certainly don’t trust nepali journalists and the bullsh*t they spew.

PS: Actually I had already written a response in this thread yesterday but as I was about to submit it the light just went out. Nepal is currently reeling under 10+ hrs of load shedding every single day and we have been warned that the load-shedding could go up as high as 18-20 hrs in the days ahead. It is indeed very perplexing that a severe power deficit exists in a country which is going through a rapid “de-industrialization” as many industries are going belly up at a record speed. A day is not far off when nepalis will have to go abroad to “see” electricity.

Ditto here , no sympathy to Himal Media.Reason I expressed my feeling here  is because Ashu Dai is there.

I  expressed the similar concern in my previous threads regarding Himal Media.Kunda Ji never liked the king and kept writing against him while praising Maoist all the time. Saap lai dudh khayo bhane aafai lai tokcha .Hope Asu Dai never take one side and instruct his staff to write a balanced and fair writings.
