India to act tough for restoration of democracy in Nepal: Report

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, April 13 - As violence in Nepal escalates and the crackdown on anti-government protesters gets harsher, New Delhi is getting ready to back up strong words with tough steps to push for the restoration of multi-party democracy in the Himalayan kingdom, an Indian news report said on Thursday.

"We will have to go beyond merely tough talk. If the situation doesn't improve, we will have to take some tough action," the online edition of the Times Of India (TOI) quoted a high-level Indian official source as saying on Thursday.

"We have many levers to call Nepal's king to account. The only problem is that such measures might give some sections in Nepal fodder for anti-India propaganda," the source added.

It is not yet clear what these steps would be, but if the push comes to the shove, New Delhi could use some of the methods it tried in 1989 to protest the Chinese supply of arms to Nepal like restricting transit points and curtailing the supply of petroleum products, the TOI report further said.

But these methods could be used only as a last resort as they led to alienating the Nepalese people instead of hurting the monarchy in 1989, cautions Maj Gen (retired) Ashok Mehta.

"We are running out of patience. King Gyanendra is not leaving us many options now," warned the official, speaking on the condition he was not identified, according to the report.

"India should come out openly in support of the constituent assembly elections. We should encourage the setting up of an interim government of the Maoists and the seven democratic parties," the report quoted S.D. Muni, a Nepal expert at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, as saying.

"The king is fighting a violent battle which he can't win. There is a growing feeling in India that this king can't be sustained," stressed Muni.

"India should convene an all-party meeting and issue a strong statement stating in clear terms that the only way out of the impasse is to restore parliament and hold elections to the constituent assembly," advised Mehta, according to the TOI report.

On Wednesday, New Delhi asked the king to stop using "repressive methods" and make a "genuine effort to initiate a dialogue with the political parties at the earliest."

The report also said that whatever backing the Nepalese monarchy enjoyed in the past in India was "fast dwindling."

The Bharatiya Janata Party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and even the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, which were known to oppose any drastic action against the king on the ground that the Nepalese king is the world's only Hindu monarch, are now having a rethink, the report said.

Writing in the latest edition of the RSS mouthpiece "The Organiser", Brajesh Mishra, the former Indian national security adviser, said: "You're digging the grave of the monarchy. You need to step back for the sake of your heirs and for the sake of your country."

Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday and urged him to use the government's "good offices to ensure the early restoration of democracy in Nepal", according to the report.

And why is this bad news? We all know by now that Nepalis aren't capable of forming a democratic body. Why not let India take over Nepal, the lowest of the lowest turd world countries.

As a matter of fact Nepal should be gulped down bigger fish like Bharat. That is what globalisation is about. It is not "Matsya Nyaya" but union with wealthy neighbours like India or China. Look at the success of United States of America and one day United Nations of Europe. What is wrong with the whole union of South Asia? It is only old traditionists like theirs' insurance with a KING and that he is going to be one daya thing of the past. Why cannot Nepal not be a republic or you its president?

Why would Indian take over nepal? why why why? what is there in nepal for india...Rather they would be happy to keep away and rip the fruits whatever they want from nepal. Have we ever been able to work independently? Do we have anything that we can call our own? (carpet ko lagi un tibet ya aru muluk bat aauchha, tarkari india bata ani je jati hamro production chha tyo pani sabai made ko udhyog marphat, aru multinational company ko sthapana garyo indian nai hamro market,)
We as a nation have totally failed to provide basic needs for our own people, we can not even construct our own public building (tel com building, bir hospital in Ktm, several colleges and even high school buildings etc). and think of official help and unofficially those lahures/gurkhas bring home their earnings every month or people using all kinda health care facilities in india and even doing daily groceries from bordering towns. aru ta aru samasya kehi parne bittikai hamro raja pani delhi, aru neta pani delhi, maobadi pani delhi, hamra gaule pani delhi (aru sahar samet), bidhyarthi pani tetai???

Ghar ma bhutibhang chhaina picnic khelnu parchha hamilai...

As a matter of fact we were never an independent though not politically. We were and are still riding indian or other countries' back and have false pride of never being colonized...Does it have any meaning when our own people call DESHA jan lageko while going for a winter trip to india to earn few hundred rupees. Sorry friends I never found ourselves proud citizens of a independent country...We are everybit dependent on India and other countries...

I would rather hope India would help us get rid of this king who was and will ever be pain in every Nepalese' ass if not thrown away now. So that some true SONS of Nepal will come forward and show us a ray of hope for a better future.

Guys who have never been out of ktm or those of you who can afford to frequent Bangkok or Hongkong malls to shop will never understand the support we guys are getting from India. Whatever you guys call but I am thankful to india for all the help nepalese are getting from her

Man freedom phobia is still better than SOCIAL PHOBIA. When you have a socaily phobic person as your partner then they just make your social life miserable.

yup india will never take over nepal....it just want nepal to be like bhutan. developing, progressive, and ever so democratic! since we have spent billions of dollars on military artilleries, india will make nepal sign treaty to look after it's security need just like it does for bhutan so that we can spend our current military budget on development and rebuilding work (WOW what a plan...how come we never thought of it? i'm sure we will be asking that to ourselves) .

along the same line, nepal's foreign policy has suffered a serious setback as the rest of deplomatic community is distancing itself from nepal in the past couple years. in this wonderfully mastermind indian propaganda to prove nepal foreign policy as incompetent and to rekindle and once again open nepal's diplomatic relationship in the international arena, india will look after and make nepali foreign policy just like it take cares of bhutan. so this way we can save trillions of dollars as we won't have to open embassies or pay corrupt bureaucrats hard earned nepali tax payer's money. instead our needs outside the country will be taken care at india's expense. Another bazzilion dollars idea indeed!

hmmmm after a deep thought....i might be OK with the above scenarios only if we could kick out all the dhots from our land, just like bhutan kicked all the nepalis from their country. what do u say?

I just dont believe India could do it .......They have a lot of mess and it will spread into Nepal too............Even though your Idea is not bad at all...................But if India sends its peace keeping force into Nepal......I wonder how Nepalese will like the Idea of being pushed around even for our own good...........By the Indians............Personally I would hate it. OI TU KAHA JA RAHA HAI????........KAHA SE AAYA...?????.....ID card DIKHA............UUUUUGGHHH!!!!.............I really dont have the answer for our country's future.......Neither the King nor the Politicians or the Maoists leaders.......can settle this in person....they prefer locals to and the citizens to do the action....after a lot of bloodshed.???...lost of life and property.?????....who will be in power????.....Voilence has been justified and human rights denied.....law brutalized ............negativity amplified........security criticized and leavind the future of our country horrified. NEPAL AAMA lai sati ko sharap lage ko chha

India taking over nepal is impossible thing to imagine. In todays world it is just not possible. Being a nuclear power it will be very bad PR for india to do such things... Indian economy depends very much on america, europe, china etc... it can not do such things if it looks after its interests... further there are people in india who want to have nepal as 'hindu' rastra... these people (mad as they are) will never accept merging of a hindu country with a 'secular' country like india.

But india might try to take 'advantage' of the situation. For instance 'defence' related treaties might be pushed. After all present situation is surely favorable for indian establishment to try such things.... More involvement of other members of international community in solution process will remove this possibility as well... Also recently india reject royal governments proposal about karnali project.. instead waiting for a democratic government so that such treaty can be made legally in full accordance with international law...

To sum up. India may try to seek its benifits while helping nepalese people. But incase it really acts as a real friend in this moment then I am sure India will get much more security from nepal side because of public goodwill than any treaty can get it.
