Reduce size of Nepal Army, says Bhattarai

KATHMANDU, Feb 9 - Leader of the CPN-Maoist Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Friday suggested that the size of the Nepal Army should be substantially reduced.

Dr Bhattarai -- whose party wants to amalgamate their fighters into the Nepal Army – today also proposed that all Nepalese citizens should be given military training after reducing the size of the NA.

Speaking at a programme today in the capital, Dr Bhattarai argued that there was no point in having so many soldiers in the NA when they were not capable of fighting against the army of two neighbouring countries -- India and China.

"We don’t need such a big security force in the country," said Dr Bhattarai.

Dr Bhattarai also claimed that state restructure was not possible unless the Nepal Army is restructured.

Stating that the current system in Nepal was not a parliamentary system, he labeled this to be a transitional republican system. He also noted that the new system will come into force once the elections to a constituent assembly were over.
