Guys,

I am pretty sure some of you may have already been in this situation. My parents are coming for a short visit to US this summer. But, the problem is they don't speak/understand english. How does it work when they need help like in transits ?

Hoping for your valuable suggestions and I appreciate your answers..

Thanks,
GOOD JOB

Goodjob, where are your parents coming to the US? Like somebody suggested, there is similar assistance that I know, which is called "meet-and-assist" provided by airlines. You can request for that service when you buy the ticket.

My mom is also coming to the US in summer. Although she has been here a few times, she does not speak English. Let me know when and where in the US your parents are coming; maybe, if it is all possible, we can try to fix the same date.

before you book tickets for your parents, let the travel agency know that they are gonna need assistant. they will put you with other nepali flying in the same date.

Gogol, we had our mom use "meet-and-assist" service. I don't if PSA is same or different kind of service, but it was termed "meet-and-assist" when I contacted the airlines.

Your best bet regarding this service would be to call the airlines and ask them.

Folks

I am also looking for anyone traveling from Nepal to USA soon. Coz my mom wants to visit me, but this is her first time travel abroad. However, i know she can use some thute phute ko english, but i dont think thats the way she should be traveling abroad alone.

A perfect scenario would be - she could travel with someone that is flying from Nepal to Florida (as i live in Florida), or with someone to another destination inside US after which she could fly to Florida. In case of destinations outside florida, a perfect city to land would be Atlanta (as i can drive up there and pick my mom). ((( i might should picky, but its just a reflection of the fact that i like to make sure my mom enjoys her trip) and not like having food problems on the way or so so, as someone has already pointed out))>

I definitely will look at the option of those assistance facilities (someone had pointed me to that stuff last week), still the best situation would be to have her accompany to any nepalese traveling from nepal to USA.

If anyone of you guys are coming to USA soon, or know of anyone coming to USA shortly, i would be greatful if you can let me know at: slamsal@ ufl.edu

Greatly appreciate your help

Sanjay

the last option is make your parents sit in wheelchair ,that way the flight attendant would handle all the thing and they will also make arrangement such that the connecting flights are not missed.
1 months before one of my relative got his parents like that ,they were old too.

Well, things get complicated when old people try to travel, when they cant utter English.

One of my friends who work for the navy had the same problem, like GoodJob's. Since he was in the US NAVY and had an IQ of 800, he had a brilliant idea which not only brought his parents to the US but also saved the airfare for both of them.

Though the practice is safe, I don’t recommend anyone to do this.

He bought two big steel boxes and made his parents to sit inside and locked it. He was smart so he gave them some food, and a large bottle of water, and made few holes in the box too.

The DHL brought them right in the door of my friend.

That saved whole lot of confusion and they even didn’t have to go to the Embassy for the VISA. How brilliant.

Daky

Daky,

You have a brilliant idea; hope you will implement it in your life someday even if others do not follow it.

Gogl,
They finally made it. I asked them to take Flight from Delhi since they were able to understand hindi. And, I informed air india by calling their 1-800 number and giving their flight details. They helped them by guiding them to the connecting flight. I had also made small papers which hadll commonly used english sentences and on the back of which I had translated that onto Nepali so that whenever they need to ask anything they can show that small paper to them and they can look at the back of the paper to clarify themselves (in nepali).

Thanks for your suggestions.

good job GOODJOB. Thank you for your suggestion... we are planning to use "meet-and-assist" and the idea you wrote in your last post... writing common english questions on one side and nepali translation on the other... thank you very much.

Thanks GoodJob.,

Remember, you can always do things in a practical manner.

You could have saved thousands of dollors, and time, if you just have listened to me.

Anyways, you have fun now.
