There is this one question that has resided in my mind for a long time. Thought I'd present it at Sajha, so maybe intelligent folks here can put forward their opinion on it.
The matter relates to astrology - Nepali ma jyotish saastra. It seems, in this field, everything emanates from the time you are born. I mean, literally, that time. Everything hinges on the precise day and time of the person's birth.
My question: WHY?
Someone said that maybe because when the child is born, the very first rays from planets (graha-haru) determines that child's attitude and future.
But WHY?
If those all powerful rays from different planets should effect the child, why should the time of birth be so significant? I am sure those planets would have as much effect when that child is in the womb, in as much as when s/he is out of it.
Does anybody know?
Disclaimer: I am somewhat skeptical of the astrology/jyotishi mumbo-jumbo. But I am trying to keep an open mind. Nonetheless, being a rationalist, I need to know WHY.

I do not know the answer to Ritens' question but.... I was told by various different jyotishi/astrologer/palm reader that I would either be a "jogi" or be "like a king". I would marry twice. I would study a lot. I dont know if all these will happen or not. But the thing to notice is different jyotishi/astrologer/palm reader said very similar thing. NB: One Jyotishi is from Ratnapark footpath, Next one is my mama who makes "china" the birth paper,,, Next one is one of my cousn who is interested in palm reading and she is a professor in chemistry,,, Next one is a professional palm reader in Shepherds Bush London.

There are tons of sites on astrology and palm-reading. Just google it.
A friend of mine was an expert on reading charts. She had a software that printed out the kundali (this one was circular, whereas our bahuns draw rectangular ones) based on time, date and place of birth. But she too could not convincingly explain to me why time, date and place of birth is so important.
If the planets set your future the moment you come out of birth canal, why could they not have any effect while you are in the womb for 9 months preceding that event?
I am still searching for answer.

They do. Once you know the actual time you came out of the womb, the time in the womb is already incorporated in the flow. The time date and place of birth is important because they tell you where the stars are lined up at that moment. It is already proven that the rays emitted by heavenly bodies depend on a lot of stuff including distance. I hope this answers your question.
