Suggestion is legit if you LOVE saving money to that level. You have to love something you are doing in order to get the satisfaction worth the hard work. Otherwise if you are just working this hard just to save it can nothing but a torture for yourself.

I look to minimize my energy bills and gas consumption too but i do it less to save money and get rich and more to not wasting energy where i can.

Saving $5 each on that extra electricity bill for 4 roommates is just nonsense. Cutting coupons really??? what immigrant here, especially a Nepali immigrant has time to cut coupons? would not her rather go "ghanta hanna" than cut coupons and save cents???

I am tired of seeing those Cheap Coupon cutting Nepalese...buy less and buy by your means and if you want to get rich, invest in education or business but at the same time spend your energy and time on something that is worth and not on saving few cents here and there.

Here are my some tips for savings:

1. Dont buy anything you DO NOT NEED just because its on sale.
2. Don't buy, buy 1 get 1 deals unless you need both. Most likely you dont need 2
3. Dont spend too much in Booze and Ganja.
4. Dont spend too much in clothes and gadget. Dont be the first one to buy new cool stuff.
5. Always look for higher paying job at your level. Dont settle, keep on looking.
6. Quit wasting time on saving pennies here and there.
7. Dont be that Cheap B%^$tard everyone hates.
8. Live by your means and hold your head high as long as you don't look for someone else to pay for your booze, cigs, rent, lunch, gas, and utilities bills.

My motto is set aside at least six month of your salary for rainy day. Rest , enjoy life so that you wont repent for anything later down the road. You gotta be litle careful not to throw away hard earned money that doesn't return any value.

I agree with SAP dude. Life, especially youth is too short to spend your time penny pinching here and there. You gotta live a little.

Its always better to change jobs than slave away for a 3 percent raise at the end of the year. Changing jobs also adds job security because you get hired into a better paying job. I've changed 3 jobs in the last 5 years and I'll do it again if I get a better offer.

I usually do all my clothes/electronics shopping during black friday and holiday season and don't worry about it the rest of the year.

Don't be frivolous with your money but don't stress over a few dollars, mari lanu k cha ra.

@SAP dude

You r right with some of your point but i will have to slightly disagree on some of your points.

1. Dnt buy anything you dnt need if its on sale.

If i see a pair of jeans, shoes or coat that i really like on sale (>50%) i think i will buy it even though i dnt need it at that moment. But this doesnt mean im going on a shopping shree. This is because im just trying to avoid buy stuff when i really "need" it because at that time when i really need it i would have to pay whatever the price is.

2. Cheap coupon cutting nepalese

I get coupon book from my grocery club store ($4 off detergent), macys ($10 off if i spend $25), etc

I dnt think by cutting coupon (spending about half hour a month) im wasting my time. I understand this way of living is not going to make me rich but if im getting free money why not use it. I have to buy stuff regardless.

Lastly, I have seen and known many white american with household income more than $100,000 and they cut coupon for their groceries and more. Cutting coupon is not being so called cheap nepalese.

So i just want to tell all the fellow nepalese that not to get discouraged by reading comments above.

Being cheap is having an iphone with no data plan. Buying a dress/suit/jacket/shoes on the day of party/event. Wearing branded cloths, buying nice car and sleeping on a used mattress.

@hakin saab

Go to the mall after christmas. Coats/jackets around end of march, etc. You will be surprised black friday is nothing. But if shopping (going to the mall) is not your thing then best of luck shopping once a year. ;)

Being frugal is harmless and perfectly alright. You know what is not right? Being a "free-loader". You might have some friends or acquaintances who never even bring a bottle of soda (forget wine or beer), when being invited over for momo parties or some dinners.

I might be pre-judgmental on this but i have experienced that NOT ALL BUT MOST frugal people are also free loaders.

They see frugality in heading to bathroom or making that emergency call just when its time to pay the bar tab or restaurant bill.

They see frugality in picking the least expensive food in pot lucks and riding expensive foods on others

They see frugality in just attending parties at others home but never inviting at their own.

The bottom line is to hide away from each tab expense, tickets, charges, bills and see if someone else will pick up their tab.

Its a sickness and in many cases a frugal gas station owner or a 100K salary earner is not ashamed or guilty of making $6 per hour gas station worker pay their bills.

I certainly do believe that people here, especially Nepali women have way too many clothes. I dont think I need two closets worth of wardrobe. Its better to work out and look good in Walmart clothes than to have pot belly and wear branded clothes from Banana republic.

My nth tip, don't buy too many items of clothing.

@SAP Dude,
you certainly don't seem to trust my simple grasp of the difference between "frugal" Vs "cheap" (or "freeloader")

AGAIN, being frugal is not same as "being cheap" or "being a freeloader".

Personally, I see myself as a frugal person. At times, I do indulge for the heck of it. In fact, my conscience tells me to be generous with my time and my greens toward people who have been kind to me in the past.

SAP Dude,

You know what the tragedy is here?
You still have not been successful in distinguishing between "Frugal" and "Cheap".
What a waste!

I give up now.

Geet...what are you hanging on to for giving up?

All i have said is that in most cases Frugality leads to Cheapness. If you are just frugal and not cheap you are an exception. I know they have two different meaning.

Staying frugal and not fall into the trap of Cheapness is a hard work on itself. Its a slippery slope but there are few who can handle the slippery slope just fine without sliding down.

SAP Dude, yes I have seen few nepalese who hesitate to spend money on almost everything. Being frugal doesn't makes your cheap. I think everyone needs to be frugal to some extend.
I save few dollars in gas, grocery, online shopping etc but I also spend 1000s of dollar for vacation trips. I never forget to tip in restaurant less than 18% and give donation every year. But while giving donations I always make sure that it's tax deductible. If you try to see the bigger picture being frugal is actually teaching you how to manage money.

While saying that I also agreed that I have seen few of nepalese friends who are super cheap. They invite people but they always want them to bring their own food and called it as "potluck". They don't go to friend's kid birthday party just because they don't have kid and they know they will not get any birthday gift.

Moreover, I have seen some people who are cheaper than cheap. They criticize the food they eat in the party. I rarely see these kind of behaviours among US nepalese but these pathetic behaviour are so common in Nepal. I think you all are getting what I am trying to say i.e "जम्मा दुइ टुक्रा मासु?" . Sorry I can't stand people who criticize foods.
In the opposite, americans here appreciate you so much when you invite them in a party and they appreciate the food too. They love free foods and party even if they are earning million dollar a year. I am not trying to compare nepalese vs American but I am trying to highlight some of the culture behaviours among us.

Here are five key differences between cheap and frugal.

1. Cheap and frugal people both love to save money, but frugal people will not do so at the expense of others.
2.  Frugality is about assessing the bigger picture and having the patience to cash in on the simple savings strategies.
3. Cheapness uses price as a bottom line; frugality uses value as a bottom line.
4. Cheap people are driven by saving money regardless of the cost; frugal people are driven by maximizing total value, including the value of their time.
5. Being cheap is about spending less; being frugal is about prioritizing your spending so that you can have more of the things you really care about.

Some more.

Everybody knows a cheap person, and probably hates them. But I think we often mislabel frugal people cheap. These are just my opinions, but here’s what I think differentiates the two:

Cheap people care about the cost of something.

Frugal people care about the value of something.

Cheap people try to get the lowest price on everything.

Frugal people try to get the lowest price on most things, but spend a lot on items they really care about.

Cheap people are inconsiderate. For example, when getting a meal with other people, if their food costs $7.95, they’ll put in $8.00, knowing very well that tax and tip mean it’s closer to $11.

Frugal people won’t order a Coke if they’re on a budget, so that when the bill comes, they don’t look cheap.

Yes, being cheap and/or frugal can be a cultural quality. I won’t spend much more time on this one, but it is an important topic in personal finance.

Cheap people keep a running tally with their friends, family, and co-workers. Some frugal people do this, too, but certainly not all.

Because of the fear of even one person suggesting they spent too much on something, cheap people are not always honest about what they spent on something. Neither are frugal people.

Cheap people are unreasonable and cannot understand why they can’t get something for free. Sometimes this is an act, but sometimes it’s not.

Frugal people will try as hard as cheap people to get a deal, but they understand that it’s a dance and, in the end, they don’t intrinsically deservea special deal.

Cheap people’s cheapness affects those around them. Frugal people’s frugality affects themselves.

Both cheap and frugal people will be more assertive than most people when trying to get a deal. Over the long term, they’ll both save more money. But one has a cost, while the other pays dividends.

Cheap people think short term. Frugal people think long term.
